It was a weekend of tragedy across the country after several fatal road traffic accidents resulted in the death of eight individuals. Southern Belize saw the deaths of three people on Friday, while four perished near Carmelita on Sunday morning and lastly, one person was killed near Harmonyville also in the wee small hours of Sunday. In the North, two families are now grieving the loss of their loved ones after a collision on the Phillip Goldson Highway resulted in the deaths of two parents and two sons. They are, Cecelio de Jesus Arana and his son Alan Arana of Orange Walk Town, as well as Aurora Angelita Chi and her son, Gustavo Chi of Palmar Village. This incident is one of several fatal road traffic accidents that occurred over the weekend, totaling to eight deaths. A.C.P. Hilberto Romero tells us that police are still investigating the cause of the accident. Here’s more on that.

If you happen to be driving along the Phillip Goldson Highway, you may spot something out of the ordinary on the ground around mile forty-five. What may appear to be litter at first glance, is a small memorial to pay tribute to the lives lost over the weekend in a deadly road traffic accident. A total of four people were killed and at least two were injured. A.C.P. Hilberto Romero, Regional Commander of the Eastern Division details the incident.

“On Sunday, the fourteenth day of July, 2024, there was a fatal accident between miles forty-five and forty-six on the Phillip Goldson Highway. Police responded where they saw a Mitsubishi Montero vehicle and a Pontiac SUV extensively damaged. Persons were treated and taken to the K.H.M.H.  At the scene police also saw the lifeless body of a female. At the conclusion, police then visited the hospital where it was confirmed that Cecilio Arana, Aurora Chi, Gustavo Chi, and Alan Arana all passed away as a result of the fatal RTA. A police officer Andy Garcia, received serious injuries and is being treated And he’s in critical condition at this time.”

The grey vehicle was being driven by forty-one-year-old Cecilio Jesus de Arana and was heading in the direction of Belize City. The black SUV, which was travelling in the direction of Orange Walk, was driven by thirty-nine-year-old Jesus Chi. Police are still investigating the cause of the collision.

“Any idea what led to this RTA?”

Hilberto Romero

“Again, this matter is under investigation. The scene was processed, sketch plan was drawn. And we will review the file thereafter to see who is at fault and if any charges will be levied. All persons are receiving treatment at this time.”

The deaths of the four individuals have taken significant emotional tolls on their families, who are now grieving the loss of two beloved family members at the same time. Among those impacted are also friends and community members. Gustavo Chi, one of the deceased, was a teacher at Orange Walk Technical High School at the time of his passing and hailed as an active community member. We spoke with Alberto Tutt, a former student of Chi, who spoke fondly of his teacher.

                           Alberto Tutt

Alberto Tutt, Former Student of Gustavo Chi

“Mister Gustavo Chi was my literature teacher in first and second form. And to be honest, he was the best teacher in Orange Walk Technical High School and I mean that in the most respectful way possible because he was always so energetic and he always made sure that his students did his work even if he yelled at us every now and then. But he did his best to make sure that we gave our best at performing our best at every piece of work he would give us. Especially when it came to reading books he would encourage all of his students to read books even if they weren’t demanded by the school and that’s why we all loved him at Orange Walk Technical High School.”

Tutt explained that the news of his teacher’s demise spread quickly among the students, who were shocked and saddened by the sudden passing.

Alberto Tutt

“It hit very hard when we found out that he died yesterday morning and everyone was calling me saying that mister is dead. I was like, wow, that’s odd. So it was very heartbreaking news yesterday in the morning. He was a very creative person. He always loved filming his little TikTok videos every now and then. Or he would, we would ask him to participate in a video and he would gladly do it with us. But the most that he could do, or even if he was tired, he would show that he wasn’t tired, but he was very clearly tired most of the time.”

Police officer, Andy Garcia, was critically injured in the incident and is currently receiving treatment at the K.H.M.H. Garcia’s family and colleagues have appealed to the public to make a blood donation to the hospital to contribute to his recovery. Britney Gordon for News Five.

5-Year-Old Died in RTA on His Birthday, Along with Two Family Members

On Friday night, tragedy struck the Tush family of Aguacate Village, while they were on the Southern Highway returning home from a night of celebrating a child’s birthday. Twelve family members left the village that evening inside a Toyota pickup truck and made their way to Punta Gorda Town for dinner to celebrate Michael Tush’s fifth birthday. On their way back, the pickup truck driven by fifty-one-year-old Jose Tush collided into a Ford F- 350. Forty-Three-Year-Old Emilio Lizama was driving that vehicle. Upon impact, the passengers of the Toyota were violently flung from the pickup. At the time there were seven minors, including one teenager and four adults, inside. Unfortunately, three people succumbed to injuries sustained from the collision. They are fifty-one-year-old Jose Tush, his daughter seventeen-year-old Renita Tush and five-year-old Michael Tush whose birthday the family was celebrating. We spoke with one family member over the phone about the tragedy.

On the Phone: Primo Tush, Relative of Deceased

“They were heading from Punta Gorda, heading to Aguacate Village and when they were between Elridgeville and Jacintoville they encountered someone on a bicycle and after passing that person on the bicycle they encountered a vehicle coming in the opposite direction with no light and then all of a sudden the driver turned on his light and flashed it directly in front of my brother which caused brief loss of his vision and that led to him losing control of the vehicle. They live in Aguacate Village, but it was the child that died birthday. It was his birthday so they decided that as a family they would head into town for dinner and that is when this happened. So far there are still two in the hospital, one is in Punta Gorda Hospital, and one is in K.H.M.H. in a very critical condition.”

Reporter

“How old is that at K.H.M.H.?”

On the Phone: Primo Tush

“The one at K.H.M.H. is six years old. When I got the message, I was very heartbroken. I was not expecting it because the last time I spoke with my brother was like two days ago. He asked me to come home, please come home and that is what ran through my mind. He asks me to come home and it is very heartbreaking. Of course we want justice for my brother and the minor and teenager that passed away. We need good investigation to get to the bottom of this. Losing three family members is not something easy. It is very hard and my sister-in-law is still in shock right now and we are trying to come together to come together and support each other. So, we are asking the relevant authority to look into this matter seriously and we are asking them to please assist us in speeding up the postmortem examination so that we can lay my brother and nephew and niece to rest in peace.”

Anyone wishing to assist the Tush family with mounting medical expenses can contact them at six, two, nine, eight, six, three, two.

Thea Garcia-Ramirez Defeats Elvia Vega-Samos in Corozal Bay

A new standard bearer has been chosen to represent the voters of Corozal Bay.  In a hotly contested convention held by the People’s United Party on Sunday, Thea Garcia-Ramirez defeated incumbent area representative Elvia Vega-Samos to become the P.U.P.’s candidate of choice in that constituency. A total of three thousand, twenty-nine voters cast their ballots in the exercise with Garcia-Ramirez, the daughter of C.E.O. Narda Garcia, coming out on top with one thousand, seven hundred and ninety-nine votes.  The lead up to yesterday’s event at Saint Francis Xavier R.C. School saw the nominees canvassing the area with their respective supporters and tensions between both camps was often described as simmering.

                        Thea Garcia-Ramirez

Thea Garcia-Ramirez, P.U.P. Standard Bearer, Corozal Bay

“Conventions have the ability to become very divisive and I just want to say categorically that I don’t take things very personally.  I know that passions run high, you know, there’s a lot of, there’s certainly a lot of energy and some of it is not always positive.  I am offering my hand and saying that we need everybody to win.  We need her camp, we need my camp, we need her machinery, we need my machinery in order to remain blue in Corozal Bay.  That is the ultimate goal.  So I am endeavoring to send her, in just a bit, an offer, if you will, and extend an invitation, rather, to form part of the new executive, my executive, and to ask her to come onboard.  I believe that she does have much to contribute and she is a person with a longstanding career for service.  She’s an educator and she’s a psychologist and I believe that as soon as tempers and emotions cool down a bit, you know, cooler heads usually prevail and that we will find a way to work together in harmony because, after all, we both have the same goal at heart.  We both have Corozal Bay and Corozal Town and the development of that town at heart.”

Why Thea Garcia-Ramirez Decided to Run

Thea Garcia-Ramirez is also the chair of the National Women’s Commission.  Her foray into electoral politics is attributed to a group of childhood friends that she went to school with and the community work they have been able to achieve together.

                           Thea Garcia-Ramirez

Thea Garcia-Ramirez, P.U.P. Standard Bearer, Corozal Bay

“Part of the success is that we are active monthly.  We are either doing clean up campaigns, we have done the entire rehabilitation of a school and we’ve painted another school and we do regular fundraising for these activities.  So it’s a team that I know well, that knows me well, [and] we work very well together and it’s a big team.  We have about two hundred and fifty people out there yesterday. I didn’t have enough time to meet with everybody, so, right off the bat, I want to assure supporters that I did not get to see this time around [that] I will definitely continue the campaign and ensure that I make more thorough visits and consultations.  It was definitely hectic.  Corozal has grown and so, as statistics recently show, it has nine thousand households.  So those are the amounts of households that we have to visit and it takes time, you know, to speak with everyone, especially establishing a relationship with the voters, the families.  It’s not a five-minute visit. I wanted to take the opportunity if I can for thanking Corozal Bay for all the voters that came out, all the voters that cast their votes.  There were some people, unfortunately, that were not on the list and to them, I would like to say, that despite that, I will reach out to each and every one of them as voters of the bay and I will campaign to them and I will present my ideas and I honestly wanted just to thank them because many of them, even if they could not vote, stood with us, encouraging and supporting, and the positive, positive energy, was really contagious.”

As we mentioned, Thea Garcia-Ramirez garnered one thousand, seven hundred and ninety-nine votes, while her political opponent and sitting area representative Elvia Vega-Samos received one thousand, one hundred and seventy-four votes.  Fifty-six votes were either spoilt or rejected.

Corozal North Chooses David Castillo as P.U.P. Standard Bearer

In Corozal North, David Castillo was also chosen as the People’s United Party’s standard bearer who will be contesting the seat occupied by U.D.P. Deputy Leader Hugo Patt in the next general elections.  Castillo ran against Doctor Einstein Bodden and Ivan Valencia in a convention held at Mary Hill R.C. School.  A total of one thousand, four hundred and ninety-eight voters cast their ballots during the convention.

                                  David Castillo

David Castillo, P.U.P. Standard Bearer, Corozal North

“We almost had one thousand, five hundred voters turn out yesterday.  There was a while when it was raining very hard, you know, if not we would have probably had more people coming out because we just had a previous convention last year whereby we had like one thousand, seven people coming out.  That convention was to elect a chairman of the P.U.P. executive.  Yesterday was for a standard bearer.  But, in general, the turnout was good, it was satisfactory and yes, I got the support of the people.  The people, basically gave me that support yesterday to continue the good work. We will ensure that we continue to roll out Plan Belize.  As you know, Plan Belize has benefited the country of Belize.  Basically, Plan Belize has restored the Belizean economy by our good Prime Minister, Honorable John Briceño and his cabinet, they have restored the economy and that is a major area that the party has concentrated in.  But there’s a lot to Plan Belize and we will ensure that Corozal North benefits from the plan of the People’s United Party and at the end of the day it will be beneficial to the people of Corozal North.  So that is our major plan for Corozal North.”

Post Convention Healing Begins in Corozal North

Following the results of Sunday’s convention, Castillo says he plans to reunite the party by working closely with his opponents who ran against him.

                             David Castillo

David Castillo, P.U.P. Standard Bearer, Corozal North

“One thing that will help a lot is the margin that we won by.  It was overwhelming, almost two or three to one.  So that in itself will help the reunification process.  Knowing myself, and people in the north and Corozal District, and even the country, I would say, know me for being a very humble and kind person and I’m a team player.  So I see no issues in reaching out to those that participated, I congratulate them for participating.  Our party’s foundation is built on democracy so it’s good, you know, it’s healthy.  But personally will reach out to them and we will get their supporters, the people that voted for them, to come in and support because they are also part of our plans, our plans for Corozal North, great plans, Plan Belize and, in particular, our plan as well.”

Cop Charged for Allegedly Pulling Gun on Wife

Tonight, a police officer is on remand at the Belize Central Prison pending a bail application for the offenses of aggravated assault with a firearm and harm upon his wife after she accused him of pointing a gun in her direction and injuring her during a domestic dispute. He is thirty-nine-year-old Myron Williams, a policeman originally from Corozal District employed and residing in Belize City. Allegations made by Williams’ wife are that on Saturday, around four forty-two a.m., her husband arrived home and from about two feet away pulled out his gun and pointed it in her direction, while accusing her of infidelity. According to the woman, she told him she was with a female friend and that is when he removed the magazine from the gun. The police were called in and Williams’ wife made a report and requested court action. Williams appeared unrepresented in court this morning where he pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly instrument. Due to the nature of the offense, no bail could be offered, and he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until August sixteenth, 2024. Although appearing unrepresented in court today, Williams told the magistrate that he has legal representation. However, his attorney could not be at his arraignment today.
