Tonight, the Dangriga community is grieving the loss of Charles ‘Cutch’ Bradley. The forty-nine-year-old fisherman was outside his home in Dangriga Town, socializing, when two men on a motorcycle drove by, and one of them opened fire, hitting him multiple times. In a shocking incident that has left a family heartbroken and the community of Dangriga Town reeling, forty-nine-year-old Charles Bradley Jr., affectionately known as “Cutch” or “Short Man,” was tragically gunned down in broad daylight right outside his home. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams has confirmed that authorities are on the hunt for a suspect who is still at large.

“Yesterday around eight, eight thirty, there about, Dangriga police were called to Ramos Road. Were upon arrival inside a yard, they found the lifeless body of one. Mr. Bradley, I think the body exhibited what appeared to be gunshot injuries. He was transported to the Southern Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.  Police investigation so far reveals that Bradley was inside his yard when two men passed on a motorcycle, one of whom fired shots in his direction.  And those shots. Were what caused his fatal injuries. At this time, police are looking for one individual. We have not been able to locate that person as yet.”

Margaret Vernon, Bradley’s mother, recalls that they had planned to attend church together that morning, but Bradley chose to stay home instead. Though she is heartbroken over the loss of her only son, she feels a deep sense of gratitude to be alive.

“And  afterward when I get ready he say, mommy, I no gwen da to church. Because I feel a little vibe. And then I gone, what I say, if maybe me and him mi gona da church, maybe ney mi ah kill two ah we. He came home, he said he was going to the cayes, cause he said he mi wa cook food for me. He usually cook on Sundays. And then I think he go right pan da lee cement, and take he lee smoke. I smoked cigarette so I sit down here, but we’re not smoking in the house. And da right there, ney kill ah.”

Vernon wouldn’t learn of her son’s tragic death until after she had returned from church.

Margaret Vernon Robateau

“Just as I reach the lane, a little young boy say, good morning Miss. He said I sympathize with you. I say, for what, son?  He said ney just shoot yo son around there. I said, can’t. That was my reaction to him.”

Police are exploring various motives behind Bradley’s tragic death. Although he had a past with the law, those close to him insist that he had turned over a new leaf, dedicating himself to his family and community. However, in 2024, Bradley’s twenty-four-year-old son, Jaheim, was arrested and charged with the Christmas Day murder of Richard Aranda. Authorities haven’t dismissed the possibility that this could be an act of revenge.

Jaheim

Chester Williams

“ It’s an  angle we’re looking at, but at this time there’s nothing to substantiate that motive, but we highly believe so.”

According to Williams, the police are leaving no stone unturned in their investigation. One theory they’re exploring is that Bradley might have accidentally come across some illicit cargo while he was out fishing.

Chester Williams

“I cannot say that at this time. But you would know that Bradley himself has his own past. And so there are several possibilities we’re looking at. And there is nothing we can definitively point to as a motive at this time.”

Today, Bradley’s family and friends gathered at his home to grieve together and offer support to his distressed mother.

“I no wa she wa brethren da like wa father. He take care of me. Anything I need, I Come da he. I da somebody very close to him, more than anybody else. Ten minutes before that happened, my  pa rus, I mi deh right deh with ah di sit down before that happened. Ten minutes, ten to fifteen minutes before that happened. I mi deh right deh di chill with the man.”

Nolberto, who considered Bradley a father, explains that the entire community feels the loss of his generosity.

George Nolberto

“I never believe it because I coulda mi be the same one weh deh  right there with ah too, the sit down right there at that time then,  maybe I mi ah get harmed too, you know, depends on who come fi di man. But da mi a good man, he take care of my kids. He give my pikni ney money every day fi school. He, every kids weh pass, he make sure  he hail ney fi a lee dollar, two, pencil books. When da Christmas he buy, like, we go and go buy five hundred dollars worth a gift and every pikni weh pass. He take care of all the pikni ney.”

With the shooter still on the loose, Margaret is pleading to be spared from further violence as she navigates her grief alongside her family.

Margaret Vernon Robateau

“I want to ask in a good Lord’s name for let nobody come and harm me and please protect me. I didn’t do anybody anything. I’m a nice Christian person and I don’t want nobody to come and hurt me. They take my son from me, my only son for me, a life for life. They say, but please don’t come and harm me.”

To avoid possible retaliation, Williams has instructed for an increased presence in Dangriga Town.

Chester Williams

“ I have directed Mr. Grinage, Commander Operations, to go to Dangriga Town immediately following the conference. So I guess he’s going to be on his field very shortly to sit to the commander in Dangriga to see what strategically we can put in place to avoid any retaliation. Certainly, yes we will look, we’ll be looking at increasing our operational presence in Dangriga Town to ensure we go after those persons who we believe are likely to do in retaliation.”

Shenyon Barrow Arraigned for Floyd McFadzean’s Murder

                       Floyd McFadzean

Last Friday, twenty-one-year-old Floyd McFadzean was tragically shot and killed while driving on Cemetery Road. Thanks to swift police action, eighteen-year-old Shenyon Levi Barrow, a fisherman from Belize City, was arrested the next day. Barrow was arraigned for the murder today, escorted to the Magistrate’s Court by special C.I.B officers, and remanded to prison until May twenty-fifth. Police allege that Barrow was the shooter who killed McFadzean and injured two others, Jaheim Bent and Troy Gentle. Consequently, Barrow also faces two counts of attempted murder and one count of dangerous harm upon Bent. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams shared details of the incident with reporters. He explained that officers responded to a report of a crashed white Fusion car at the corner of Johnson Street and Cemetery Road shortly after shots were heard. Behind the wheel was the deceased, Floyd McFadzean, a messenger from Neal Penn Road. Further investigation revealed that two individuals on a motorcycle had fired at the car, causing injuries.

                   Chester Williams

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“Thursday night, early Friday morning, police responded to information of shots fired on Cemetery Road, Belize City. Um, upon arrival, they encountered a white car, and inside the vehicle was the lifeless body of a male person, that person was taken to the KHMH where he was pronounced dead. On arrival there were two other persons inside the vehicle who also sustained minor injuries. Those persons were treated and released. Police have since conducted investigation into that matter, which revealed that the white car had gone somewhere in St. Martin’s area and leaving out of St. Martin’s, they were followed closely behind by a motorcycle and reaching the area of Constitutional Park. They, one of the persons on the motorcycle fired multiple shots at the vehicle, causing the fatal injuries too. The victim police investigation have led to the arrest of a guy from the Martins era, I think his name is Barrow. He was charged for one point of murder and two convicts of use of deadly means of harm against the two other persons. Certainly there were persons in the vehicle who are of gun affiliates and I concur with the statement of the family of the disease that he’s not an active gang member per se, but like the, I think the father rightly mentioned that it could have been as a result of the company he kept because. While he’s not out there actively involving in gun activities, and indeed he’s a working person he do have friends who are a part of the George Street gang. And, we certainly believe that he was not the intended target, but again, he was the one driving the vehicle.”

Police Seek to Discourage Crime on Motorbikes

The McFadzean murder, like many others, was carried out by men on motorcycles. Williams informed the media that he has directed his commanders to take strong measures to deter crimes committed by motorcycle riders. He emphasized that commanders have been instructed to “remove the capabilities” of those using motorcycles to evade the police. Additionally, Williams mentioned that they will concentrate on the city’s hot spots to curb such activities.

              Chester Williams

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“Mr. Romero was not able to make it to conference today, but will be communicating with him very shortly and as I have been communicating with him over the weekend as well, making sure that we maintain our strong presence in certain areas of Belize City. And those areas in particular are George Street, the Martins area, and as well as the Port or the Caesar Ridge area. Those are areas of concern for us. We do this without neglecting our responsibility to the other areas of the city because you all know that every area on South Side Belize City does have the potential to have a flare up at any given time. So we have to ensure that while we cover certain areas. We still need to make sure that we have the other areas covered as well. So if it requires that we have to send additional manpower to the city to be able to quell the issue, then we are going to do that. But so far, I believe that Belize City has been kept a bit under control and we are hoping that if we can keep it that way or make it even better moving forward.”

Reporter

“Are you concerned with this new MO that has twice been used to target members of the George Street gang, where  they aren’t necessarily in a gang turf, but they’re attacked in vehicles in drive-by shootings?”

Chester Williams

“Of course, every incident that has to do with violence we are concerned about. The issue is, as I said to my commanders this morning, that we have to pay keen attention to those gang members who are moving around on motorcycles. They are the problem and I have given them certain tasks this morning in conference. I’m not going to say what the task is, but we have to ensure that we do what we can to eliminate those persons who are using these motorcycles, they go and commit a crime. And when I say eliminate, I don’t mean to take them out, but I mean to remove the capabilities from them to be able to go and do these types of acts. They tend to use motorcycles because it is easy for them to maneuver through the traffic and even through narrow alleys and evade the police easily. So it is something we have been focusing on, but we need to pay more attention to.”

Tourist Raped in San Pedro

A tourist has come forward with allegations that she was raped by one of the two people she was socializing with over the weekend. Commissioner Williams explained that the incident took place in San Pedro and that the woman might have trusted the accused due to his friendly demeanor. However, when the third person left for the night, the accused allegedly took advantage of the situation. According to Williams, the complainant has injuries that support her claim.

Chester Williams

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“A tourist reported to the police that she and other persons were socializing. They eventually went to a house or a hotel and they hung out there for a little while more. Thereafter, she left the hotel along with an individual to go and drive. And, during that time, the individual took her to a location where he had sexual intercourse with her against her will. Police have since investigated that matter and one individual was charged for the crime of rape against a tourist, and he’s expected to appear in court sometime today.

Reporter

These are interpersonal encounters and there’s very little you can do, but our police are looking closely at this case because the two persons were hanging out for a long period of time, and she said in the report that her brother had gone inside and then she continued circling with this individual. Is it clear at what point or on or what circumstances he crossed the line of consent with these tourists?

Chester Williams

Well, we do know that we have tourists who come to our country, many of them tend to feel comfortable and so relaxed with us because we are a very friendly people and our friendliness is captured by these stories and so that they trust us and it’s a situation where the tourist might have placed her trust in this individual and he took advantage of her. If a woman says no, then it is no. And a man must respect that. I was not there with them, but I don’t see a reason why the tourist would lie about him. Certainly he did something she did not consent to and so she reported to the police and we took the direct action that we should be taking and it is going to be a matter later for the judge and jury to decide his guilt Innocence.”

Tourist Mauled to Death on Snorkeling Tour

A tragic boating accident claimed the life of a seventy-year-old tourist on Sunday while snorkeling near Turneffe Atolls. Commissioner Williams pointed out that this unfortunate incident could have been avoided. The tourists were in a designated area marked for their activity, and the approaching boat captain should have seen the markers and steered clear but failed to do so. Williams believes that the captain should face charges for causing death by careless conduct, at the very least.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“A group of tourists were snorkeling in the area of Turneffe. From my understanding is that the area where they were snorkeling, the tour guides had the area marked off as they would normally do to indicate that there is activity taking place there. And a boat came from nowhere and just ran through the place at very high speed and ran over the tourist causing the tourist’s death. The boat captain is currently in police custody. The investigators and personnel and the Port Authority went out to the scene this morning. They should be returning sometime this evening, but from what I am seeing, I’m not going to be the one to determine. If the boat captain is to be charged or not, but from what I am seeing based on what has been told to me, that is a clear case of causing debt, backyard conduct.  I think at the very least the boat captain should be charged for causing debt, backyard conduct. It is common knowledge to all of these tour operators that when you see certain things in the waters as markers, you have to avoid those areas because people are either diving or snorkeling there and the tour operators who took out the tourists discharged their responsibility by making sure that they had marked out the place to indicate to any boat that would come in the area, that that is an area where, uh, people are diving or snorkeling. So this boat captain, who was not a part of that tour operator had to have seen the markers as an indication that he should not have gone through that area. So at the very least for me, I see man causing death by careless conduct.”

U.S Fugitive Found Hiding in Placencia to Be Handed Over

A man wanted by U.S. law enforcement was found hiding out in southern Belize, specifically in Placencia. Gregory Roth, also known as “Chris,” was wanted by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office in Texas on eleven counts of possession of child pornography. Suspecting Roth was in Belize, the United States Embassy issued an appeal for information on his whereabouts and offered a reward for his capture. Roth was reportedly traveling and living in an RV. Today, Commissioner Williams announced that local authorities are in the process of handing him over to the U.S. government.

                 Chester Williams

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“The police in Placencia in conjunction with serious some of our specialized units, worked to be able to locate and secure the detention of a fugitive was wanted in the U.S. He is in police custody, I believe, and should be taken out of the country very shortly, if not yet taken out again. We worked with our U.S. counterparts as we do with other countries to be able to help them to secure persons who may be hiding in beliefs that are wanted by the different police organizations and across the world.”

Chester Williams Prepares for Departure from Police Department

After more than six years as Belize’s Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams is moving on to greener pastures. As the longest-serving Commissioner to date, Williams is set to become the Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Transport. During a press briefing earlier today, Williams confirmed that the transfer is in the works, though it’s not yet finalized. While he can’t make an official announcement just yet, he promised to continue his efforts to keep Belize safe in his new role. Here’s what he had to say.

Chester Williams

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“I cannot speak to my appointment as CEO as it I know that yes, there is something in the making and hopefully we should be able to finalize this week. And once that is done, then I will be able to speak to you, in respect of that. But I can certainly say that I am willing and prepared to serve in whatever way the Prime Minister sees it fit for me to serve. If it is that I go to the Ministry of Transport as a CEO, there’s a lot that I know my expertise can take to the ministry with a view to enhanced road safety across this country. Last year we had over one hundred traffic fatalities on our highways, and that certainly is unacceptable. So, we need to do a lot in terms of making our highways safer for all our road users. And that is going to be my number one priority to move over to the Ministry of Transport as a CEO.”

Reporter

“Will the department, you working maybe closer with the police department in that sense. Then?”

Chester Williams

“What I told my commanders this morning that if that should come to fruition, that we certainly will have a brother sister relationship because we must work hand in hands too. Be able to ensure that we keep our highways safe for all the users.”

Chester Says his Car Dealership Won’t Conflict with Transport CEO Duties

Earlier today, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams confirmed that he is looking forward to his anticipated appointment as C.E.O. of the Ministry of Transport. While many are excited about the positive changes Williams could bring to road safety, some are worried about a potential conflict of interest due to his personal car dealership business. Williams was asked how he plans to navigate compliance with the ministry’s importation regulations and the ongoing efforts to eliminate vehicles in poor condition from Belize’s roads.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“When you left from here, you go to the car lot  and you see a type of vehicle I import, I don’t import rubbish. I make sure I import vehicles that are safe and are of good standard.  That’s why I don’t sell much because they’re good vehicles, right? At the end of the day,  I always do things the right way. I know for a fact that you’re watching very closely and I certainly will not be cutting my pants down by you. And so I will always endeavor to make sure that I comply with every requirement that is in place for whatever business I venture into. It is important not just because you and the other media houses are watching, but it is important because it’s the right thing to do,  right? Simple as that.”

ComPol Commends Department for Reducing Murder Rate

As Commissioner of Police Chester Williams gets ready to step down, he takes a moment to reflect on the department’s achievements during his tenure. Williams, who joined the force at just seventeen years old, has worked tirelessly to overcome challenges and rise through the ranks to serve the people of Belize. He shared that while there are many accomplishments he’s proud of, the significant decrease in Belize’s murder rate stands out as a major success. Here’s more on that.

                Chester Williams

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“We certainly did a lot. If we look right across from this building, you can see the Compstat office. I’m extremely proud of that achievement. There are several things I can list out, but I will leave that for when the official day comes. But one of the most things I’m proud of is the fact that we were able to bring the murder count below a hundred for two consecutive years. Again,  those are many lives saved, right? And if it is that we save one life we save, we would have done well, but we saved many lives I can say. And so I am extremely grateful for that. Another issue I’m proud of is that we are able to reduce the amount of complaints against the police brutality cases.  We reduce that tremendously, which means that we as a department have done a lot in terms of human rights training of our officers to make them understand that we must respect the rights and dignity of people. And while we’ll never reach that studio. We’ll have no complaints at all. I believe that we have done a lot in terms of making sure that we are able to reduce it tremendously, so I’m proud of that as well.”

Chester Instructs Force to Comply with Incoming Commissioner

Chester Williams’ successor as Commissioner of Police is yet to be confirmed, although indications are that Deputy Commissioner of Police Doctor Richard Rosado has been tapped for the post. However, Williams is confident that the new commissioner will be up to the task and expects a smooth transition for the department, provided the force respects the new leadership. In a conference with the department’s commanders this morning, Williams offered guidance on how to operate under the new commissioner. He shared more details on those instructions today.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“I told them that they need to throw their support behind the person who is going to be appointed commissioner police when I leave.  I explained to them the importance of them supporting the new commissioner. We are a disciplinary organization and whether you have, if you have something personal against a person who is going to be appointed, you need to put that aside and focus on your professional responsibility which is to work with the commissioner, making this country safe. The person who is going to be appointed I believe that he’s capable. He should be able to continue from where I am leaving off in enhancing the effectiveness of the police department and making this country safe. So they are pledge that they will support the person and I do hope that they do, as they say. And I also said to them that the practice of them calling and briefing the media when conference is over, that I hope that comes to an end. Confidentiality is extremely essential. Especially at our level. If at the top of the department we cannot keep certain things confidential, then what do we expect of those persons below? I also told him that the undermining must also stop. Whoever is going to be the new commissioner, they cannot undermine him. They must work together because they have one common objectives, which is to make this country safe. So I hope that they take my advice, and if they do, then I foresee that they will have a smooth sailing in my absence.”
