In 1983, Great Belize Productions Ltd.(GBPL) was formed as a small video production company. GBPL produces commercials and documentaries and works with international productions on production services.
In 1991, GBPL acquired a broadcasting license and became the nation’s first television station with locally produced programming. Thus, giving rise to Great Belize Television (GBTV), locally known as Channel 5 Belize.
In December 1991, Channel 5 premiered News 5 Live, a locally produced national news program – the station’s flagship. Many other uniquely Belizean programs have been created since then. These include The Andy Palacio Show, Lauren Da Mawnin, One on One with Dickie Bradley, Spotlight, Veranda Tales, Fanta Quest, Masters of the Floors, Yes to I Do, The Belize Apprentice, Great Belize Cooking and many more.
Channel 5 has an established reputation for high-quality productions that have earned multiple regional awards. Today it is Belize’s leading television station and foremost provider of local and regional programming. It produces year-round programming, including News 5 Live and the Open Your Eyes morning show which the station launched in 2008. Channel 5 also produces a summer entertainment show – the wildly popular KTV. Their week-long anniversary celebration in December – Gimme 5!
The station offers nationwide coverage, transmitted via cable in all districts and broadcast over the air in central, western & southern Belize. It also has the most extensive local media presence on social media platforms. GBPL is a proud member of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union, the Public Media Alliance and the Belize Chamber of Commerce. GBPL continues to offer production services coupled with broadcasting and streaming capabilities from GBTV.
