Chester Williams Prepares for Departure from Police Department

After more than six years as Belize’s Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams is moving on to greener pastures. As the longest-serving Commissioner to date, Williams is set to become the Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Transport. During a press briefing earlier today, Williams confirmed that the transfer is in the works, though it’s not yet finalized. While he can’t make an official announcement just yet, he promised to continue his efforts to keep Belize safe in his new role. Here’s what he had to say.

“I cannot speak to my appointment as CEO as it I know that yes, there is something in the making and hopefully we should be able to finalize this week. And once that is done, then I will be able to speak to you, in respect of that. But I can certainly say that I am willing and prepared to serve in whatever way the Prime Minister sees it fit for me to serve. If it is that I go to the Ministry of Transport as a CEO, there’s a lot that I know my expertise can take to the ministry with a view to enhanced road safety across this country. Last year we had over one hundred traffic fatalities on our highways, and that certainly is unacceptable. So, we need to do a lot in terms of making our highways safer for all our road users. And that is going to be my number one priority to move over to the Ministry of Transport as a CEO.”

“Will the department, you working maybe closer with the police department in that sense. Then?”

“What I told my commanders this morning that if that should come to fruition, that we certainly will have a brother sister relationship because we must work hand in hands too. Be able to ensure that we keep our highways safe for all the users.”
