Belize City Woman is Charged for Burglary

On Friday, March fourteenth, 2025, around 4:50 p.m., Natasha Miles, a thirty-eight-year-old business owner from Belize City, reported a burglary at the Precinct 2 Crimes Investigation Branch office. She explained that she had left her house in the care of her carpenter, who was renovating it, and had secured her home before leaving on Thursday, March thirteenth. When Miles checked her house on Friday around 1:00 p.m., she discovered damage to several items: two mahogany doors valued at three hundred dollars each, two door locks worth twenty-five dollars each, two plycem sheets costing fifty-nine dollars each, and an aluminum window valued at two hundred and sixty dollars, totaling nine hundred and ninety dollars in damages. She also noticed that a small black fan was missing. Police investigated the scene and found that entry was gained by breaking the bottom part of the back door. They processed the scene, took pictures, and recorded a statement from an eyewitness who identified Breth-Tesha Alex Copious as the burglar. Video footage confirmed the eyewitness’s account. Based on the investigation, police visited Copious’ home on Raleigh Street, informed her of the report, and detained her. She was charged with burglary and damage to property. This morning, Copious appeared in court, unrepresented, where she faced charges of burglary and damage to property. Copious pleaded not guilty to both charges. The Senior Magistrate offered her bail at two thousand dollars each, plus one surety of the same amount.

Elderly Belize City Man Charged with Aggravated Assault

A seventy-four-year-old man, Christopher Augustus Lamb, is facing charges of aggravated assault and wounding after allegedly attacking another man with a machete. In court, Lamb told the Senior Magistrate that while he pleaded guilty to the charges, he insisted, quote, I didn’t do it, end quote. Lamb appeared unrepresented in court, where he was read two counts: one for aggravated assault and one for wounding. The allegations state that on Sunday, March sixteenth, 2025, on Gulen Street in Belize City, Lamb assaulted and wounded Albert Ferguson with a machete. Before entering his plea, Lamb asked to explain his side of the story. He claimed that he hit Ferguson with a fluorescent bulb after an argument with Ferguson’s wife, who had called him some ugly names. According to Lamb, Ferguson then came at him with a knife and an iron. Lamb said the police have these two objects as evidence. Lamb further explained that Ferguson came to his gate, shook it, and threatened to kill him. In fear for his life, Lamb said he acted in self-defense by hitting Ferguson with the bulb. After hearing his explanation, the Senior Magistrate entered an equivocal plea on Lamb’s behalf. Lamb was granted bail of $1,500, which he met, and his case was adjourned to May 2025.

Toxicology Results from Royal Kahal Resort Due in One Week

It’s been over a month since the tragic discovery of the bodies of three American tourists in their hotel suite in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. The initial test of the room found no trace of carbon monoxide, but this conflicts with a report from Massachusetts last week. Today, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams announced that Belizean authorities have decided a second round of tests is necessary. This decision comes after another complaint surfaced about a previous guest experiencing carbon monoxide issues in the same suite. Williams emphasized that the case remains a death investigation pending the autopsy report.

Chester Williams

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“We had a meeting whereby we had a representative from the police. We have, we had from the fire department, the environment, and even from the Minister of Health. And it was agreed that a second round of testing be done at the hotel. This was after we had received reports from some previous guests at the hotel who had indicated that while they were there, they had done some tests with their own carbon monoxide test and they had detected carbon monoxide. So it was agreed to go back in and do a second round of testing. And that was done. I am not sure yet what the result of that test is. We have not received a report from the fire department or the Department of Enrollment on the result of that test. Um, so we are waiting for that. I guess again, that was the reason why the hotel owner had closed the hotel to allow the investigators from police, fire, and enrollment to go in and conduct further testing if it is found that there was carbon monoxide in this room, can the hotel be. Criminally liable? No, that would be far within the civil domain. Um, I am hopeful that the, the result of the toxicology tests will be received within the next week or two, and that is going to give us some good guidance in terms of what may have led to the death of these three, three women. So I, I still don’t want to, to speculate at this time and await the result of the toxicology report.”

Tourism Minister Says Hotel Closed Down Voluntarily

The situation sparked international outrage, especially from the families of the deceased. Minister of Tourism Anthony Mahler mentioned that his office is fully informed about the incident. He noted that the hotel’s decision to temporarily close was voluntary. Depending on the results, the hotel might reopen for business soon.

                       Anthony Mahler

Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism

“It was a voluntary shutdown. We found some issues with the property and so we had a discussion with them and they decided to shut down to take remedial actions to deal with the issues that we had found. But in terms of the tests and the toxicology tests, we’re still waiting on that to determine the true cause of death.”

Paul Lopez

“Nothing about carbon monoxide has passed your desk as yet officially?”

Anthony Mahler

“Well, we’ve had a discussion about that. That is a possibility. We’re not ruling anything out, but I can assure you, the families believe that we will do the right thing in terms of putting the information forward as we get the information.”

Paul Lopez

“Are there plans to reopen the hotel when the investigation is completed?”

Anthony Mahler

“Well, as long as it’s approved by the necessary agencies to be opened.”

Gilroy Usher Jr. Charged for Attempting Run Over His Sister

Gilroy Usher Junior, forty-four, who was recently called to the bar in Belize in late 2024, is facing serious allegations. He’s accused of trying to run over his sister, Monica Usher, thirty-seven, with a Ford F150 pickup truck. Today, he appeared in court to answer to a single charge of aggravated assault. Usher Junior, the son of Port Loyola Area Representative Gilroy Usher Senior, stood unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate, where he pleaded not guilty. With no objections to bail, the magistrate set it at two thousand dollars, plus one surety of the same amount, with strict conditions. He must not interfere with his sister, any family members, or prosecution witnesses, and must stay at least twenty-five feet away from her. His next court date is scheduled for May fifth, 2025. Court records revealed that Usher Junior owed fifty dollars for a 2017 traffic conviction for using an unlicensed vehicle, which he had to pay before posting bail. Outside the courtroom, Usher Junior described the situation as ‘an ongoing family issue’ and denied his sister’s allegations, calling them total embellishment. He admitted there was an incident but insisted it was nothing like what she claimed. The family feud between Usher and his siblings has been simmering for some time.

Man Murdered Near PG Cemetery; Police Suspect Friend

Over the weekend, a tragic incident occurred near the Punta Gorda cemetery where a man was murdered. Police suspect that the killer was one of the two individuals he was socializing with. Investigations revealed that Coy was along with two other persons in that area consuming alcoholic beverages when several gunshots were heard and police found him with the gunshot injuries. There is one person in custody at this time. We are seeking one more in connection to this murder investigation.”

Marion Ali

“Who is the main suspect?”

A.C.P. Hilberto Romero

“ One is one of the persons that was at the scene at the time.”

Police Suspect Woman was Murdered in Domestic Dispute

Meanwhile, in Corozal, police are looking into the tragic murder of a woman in Concepcion Village. They suspect that thirty-six-year-old Wendy Mendez might have been caught in a domestic dispute, especially since she was gravely injured in a chopping incident back in 2022 that nearly took her life. A.C.P. Hilberto Romero shared that Mendez succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, following an attack on Friday, March ninth.

                   A.C.P. Hilberto Romero

A.C.P. Hilberto Romero, Regional Commander, Eastern Division

“On Sunday, the ninth of March 2025 a report was received that a female was found unconscious in Concepcion Village. She was taken for medical treatment. Thereafter, police visited and saw the victim. She later succumbed to her injuries on Friday. Several interviews are being conducted and we’re trying to determine what happened to her as she was at the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. She was identified as Wendy Mendez of Concepcion Village.”

Marion Ali

“Do police believe this was a domestic issue?”

A.C.P. Hilberto Romero

“Well, we have certain information that we are following up on and so, we should do some follow up today and the coming days to determine what happened to her.”

Reporter

“Would that information include a prior police report involving domestic violence?”

A.C.P. Hilberto Romero

“Yes, we have a report and that is being followed up likewise.”

Detained For Lighting Fireworks During Election Celebration

Election celebrations often come with fireworks, and we saw plenty of them in various constituencies, including Orange Walk Central, where Prime Minister John Briceño secured his seat. However, in Port Loyola, things took a turn when a relative of Gilroy Usher got into hot water with the police for setting off fireworks. After searching his vehicle, officers found even more fireworks. The individual cooperated with the police and was eventually detained. We asked ComPol Williams for his take on the incident.

                      Chester Williams

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“He was detained for an investigation; police officers are dealing with that matter at this time and then we will see how that goes from there.”

Reporter

“So, he may be facing charges?”

Chester Williams

“At this time, there is nothing to say he can be charged, but the investigation is still ongoing.”

Shooting Victims Crash into KHMH Building

On Sunday morning, three men were shot at while driving a pickup truck on the Phillip Goldson Highway. The driver, Joseph Garcia, was hit but managed to speed towards Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, which was nearby. Sadly, he died, and the vehicle crashed into the hospital’s exterior wall. The other two passengers, Ronlee Petillo and Shamar Faber, are still in the hospital. News Five’s Paul Lopez has more on this story.

Paul Lopez, Reporting

One man is dead, and another is in critical condition at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital after a shooting on the Phillip Goldson Highway in Belize City. On Sunday morning, Joseph Garcia, Ronlee Petillo, and Shamar Faber were in an SUV when a gunman opened fire on them. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams mentioned that the men were being followed by passengers in a white car.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

Ronlee Petillo and his group were coming from the area of Haulover Bridge into Belize City when they were followed by a white vehicle and a silver Forerunner and upon reaching the area of the flour mill the white vehicle overtook them and the occupants from that white car fired multiple shots at the vehicle Petillo and his group were in fatally injuring one person.”

Garcia was driving when they were attacked. He sped down the highway towards Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital but lost consciousness and crashed into the hospital’s cafeteria. This shocking incident left employees stunned, as described by Chief Executive Officer Chandra Cansino.

Chandra Cansino, C.E.O., KHMHA

“They came straight to the hospital and because of the seriousness of the injuries the driver was unable to make it to the emergency unit. They drove straight into the building. Where you saw the truck is an actually the cafeteria. And so, thankfully there are no patients there, but we do have our staff there. So we were concerned both for them and the integrity of the building. So, we got someone to look at that. The integrity of the building was fine, we do have some major damages to the wall. So we closed down the cafeteria yesterday and gave the staff support.”

Garcia succumbed to the injuries he sustained. According to police, Petillo is in a stable condition, while Faber remains in a critical condition.

Chester Williams

“Mr. Petillo is admitted in a stable condition and contrary to what some media houses reported that he got shot in the neck and is critical, that is not true. He got a graze to the back of head and a shot in the hand and he is in good spirit and stable. The other person is in a critical condition and is in the ICU. We are hoping he will be able to pull through. So far we have been on the ground trying to view as much surveillance footage as we can. But since it was a holiday we were not able to get as much as we want to. Together the investigators were busy to put together the pieces to come to a determination as to who are responsible for that particular incident.”

This is not the first attempt on Petillo’s life. He has also had multiple run ins with the law. ComPol Williams says Garcia was an innocent passenger in the vehicle

Chester Williams

The young man who died is certainly innocent. He is from Dangriga. He came up and took Petillo to the Max Borough area and because he was with Petillo he became a victim of those circumstances.”

Commissioner Williams praised the quick actions of the medical team at KHMH. He mentioned that the people in the vehicle made a smart move by racing to the hospital, as their attackers might have killed all three of them. In response to rising gang violence in the Old Capital, the hospital has increased its security measures.

Chandra Cansino

“We have a very prepared Accident and Emergency Unit which is not where the vehicle came unfortunately. But, even yesterday when the accident happened, personnel were here and took the victims straight to the emergency. We do have ramped up surveillance. We are working closely with the police. They actually have some police officers here as well. Our concern is for the safety of the patients and staff as a priority. We have ramped up our surveillance and security and working along with the police in that regard.”

Family Man Killed Inside His Home Following Mark Usher’s Murder

Just a day after Mark Usher was shot outside his home, another resident in the area was murdered, this time inside his house. Police believe the two killings are connected. Forty-one-year-old Rafael Caceres had just finished a twelve-hour shift at Bowen and Bowen and was taking a nap after lunch when he was killed. Here’s News Five’s Marion Ali with the report.

April Slusher, Common-law Wife of Deceased

“I hear bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.  When I run out ya, da person, all weh I holla, (****), watch weh you just done do. You kill my man.” You think he look back? He run He never even run down the step, he just start to jump. He just start to jump down the step.”

Marion Ali, Reporting

April Slusher saw the man who had just killed her common-law husband fleeing from their home on Robinson Street, near Faber’s Road, shortly after midday. Slusher had spent the last fifteen years with Rafael Caceres, and they had three young daughters together. She recalled that on Sunday afternoon, Caceres had just finished eating, and she was washing his plate in the kitchen when she heard gunshots at the doorway.

April Slusher

“The way how he come in, he come here like we know he. We nuh even know this person weh come ya, fi he come tek my husband’s life like this.

What’s worse is that the couple’s three-year-old daughter was sitting right across from her father but out of the killer’s view. She heard the shots that killed her dad and saw when his body went limp.

April Slusher

“Mi baby mi deh over dey across fa he. She just shock. She nuh even see because the curtain mi deh right deh. He politely come, haul the curtain. I di tell yoh mammy, this hurt.”

Police Commissioner Chester Williams reported that by the time investigators arrived, Caceres had already died.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“On Sunday afternoon just after midday, police were called to the Arlington Drive area of Belize City where upon arrival they encountered the lifeless body of Mr. Rafael Caceres inside his home with multiple gunshot injuries. He was taken to the K.H.M.H., where he was pronounced dead on arrival. It is our belief that the shooting death of Caceres is a direct retaliation for the death of Mark Usher.”

Police believe this killing is directly linked to the murder of Mark Usher.

Chester Williams

“Following the death of Mark Usher, we had actually detained all the Caceres brothers, but we didn’t go for Raphael because Raphael has not been in the loop. He has been a very good citizen, law-abiding, working, and so we did not anticipate that they would have targeted him. He actually lived far away from the other Caceres brothers, so I guess that because they could not have found the other brothers, they went after the one who was most vulnerable.”

It’s unclear if surveillance cameras caught the moments before and after the killing, but reports indicate that a grey Ford Escape with no license plates was seen circling the house before the incident. This is the vehicle the gunman reportedly emerged from. Meanwhile, April Slusher strongly denied accusations that they were harboring criminal relatives of Caceres.

April Slusher

“Anybody weh know me, know April, April, know I nuh harbor no bredda. I drive da vehicle when they see me in deh, and know that no bredda never deh in ya and no bredda nuh come eena my house.”

Slusher spoke to the media from the very chair where Caceres had been sitting at the entrance of their home when he was murdered. Today she lamented her loss.

April Slusher

“All weh I want da coward  know, when he tek weh from my pikni and me, he kill a good  man because my husband gone. But fi he legacy, and people weh know he wa still carry that on, and speak the truth and tell everybody what a good person my husband was.”

Commissioner Williams stated that after the murder, police increased their presence in the area to gather all possible evidence and ensure the culprit is brought to justice.

Chester Williams

“We have since detained one suspect. That suspect will be placed on identification parade today and it is our hope that he would be, he will be identified and will be charged for the murder of Mr. Caceres. The man certainly was doing well, living with his family not bothering nobody. And so when you venture to kill somebody innocent, just because you couldn’t get the ones that you want, that is troubling. And we take it seriously, and that’s the reason why we deployed as much as we could have resources in the area. We need to get whatever evidence we need to get it so that we can hold those whoever is responsible for his murder for justice.”
