Doris Grant is Charged for Being a Member of a Gang

It’s been a tough few weeks for forty-eight-year-old Doris Grant.  From being charged with forty counts of theft and obtaining property by deception, to police raids on her properties in Gardenia Village and Belize City.  On Sunday morning, the businesswoman and her common-law husband came under gunfire on Fairweather Street, while heading home from a concert event.  While the pair is recovering from injuries received during the ambush, things have only gotten worse for Grant and thirty-one-year-old Austin Underwood.  Tonight, the couple is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after being charged for gang membership.  Shortly after twelve o’clock today, Grant and Underwood appeared before the lower courts where they were arraigned on a single charge each.  It is alleged that they are both members of the Southside Gang.  The couple pleaded not guilty, nonetheless, they were denied bail at the Magistrate Court level.  With that, Grant and Underwood are being held at the Belize Central Prison until July thirty-first.  Attorney Ronnell Gonzalez sought permission to make submissions on their behalf for the court to consider granting bail under special circumstances, however, the court did not entertain the request.  As we’ve reported, Grant is being investigated for her alleged involvement in a land scheme in which several Mennonites were defrauded out of millions of dollars.

Four Foreigners Guilty of Illegal Entry

Tonight, four foreigners are awaiting expulsion after they pleaded guilty to illegal entry. For the same incident, two Belizeans who were accused of facilitating the foreigners after they entered Belize illegally have also pleaded guilty. The four foreigners are Emil Dasdamirov, Mistaftar Oglu, and Karman Amurili, all from Azerbaijan near Iran, and Brazilian national, Gilson Fernandes Junior. Allegations are that on June nineteenth, they entered Belize through the banks of the Mopan River in Benque Viejo del Carmen. They all pleaded guilty and apologized for committing the offence. One of them told the court that he entered Belize through Honduras and that he thought that after they crossed the river, they would have met the Immigration Office, something they have done before. He said they were told they could travel through Belize with their European visa which allows them multiple entries. Another said he was told they could enter the same way. The four men were fined a thousand dollars each, plus a five-dollar cost of court fine and they were ordered to pay their fines forthwith or they would spend six months in jail. The magistrate also issued an expulsion order for them to be sent back to their native countries. Following the arraignment, two Belizeans who were caught assisting the group of four upon their illegal arrival into Belize were charged for facilitating the commission of a crime. Twenty-eight-year-old Jasmine Espat, a Store Manager and Clerk at Naybaz Store in Belmopan and her common-law husband, Samuel Peters, a traffic officer of Santa Elena, pleaded guilty to facilitating the commission of a crime. Espat was the front-seat passenger in a Chevrolet Malibu vehicle that was intercepted the same day at the intersection of the Phillip Goldson Highway and the Burrell Boom Road carrying the four foreigners. Peters was said to be the driver of the vehicle. Espat told the court that she fell into hardship and had to deal with a sick child, and health issues and that when the men approached them and offered to pay five hundred dollars, she accepted. Peters told the court a similar story. He said he felt ashamed, having been employed only three weeks ago as a traffic officer. Their guilty plea was accepted, and the magistrate said she wanted to send them both to jail for the offence, but because it was their first offense, she would warn them of the serious offense they have committed. She said that no hardship should have made them break the law. The couple who was not paid for the job they accepted from the foreigners are now facing fines of a thousand dollars each plus cost of court. Espat was ordered to pay her fine immediately, or face five months in prison and Peters was given until July thirty-first to pay his.

Murder Trial against Earl Baptist Concludes in High Court

A murder trial involving twenty-three-year-old Earl Baptist as a prime suspect in the shooting death of Burrell Boom businessman Leslie Gillett has concluded in the High Court.  Baptist is one of two men who allegedly entered Matilda’s Shop and executed Gillett in January 2022.  A second suspect was never identified.  Tonight, Baptist remains at the Belize Central Prison after appearing before Justice Derick Sylvester earlier today.  The crown is relying on testimonies from Sergeant Santiago Perez, the police officer who retrieved the surveillance footage that captured Gillett’s murder, and Sergeant Rollington Fuller who positively identified Baptist as one of two shooters seen at Matilda’s Shop on the night in question.  However, attorney Leeroy Banner is challenging the crown’s evidence, submitting that footage of the individual that Fuller claims to be Earl Baptist is not clear for anyone to identify with a degree of certainty.  Justice Sylvester has reserved his ruling for June twenty-seventh.

BREAKING: Keyren Tzib Sentenced to Four Years, Ten Months Behind Bars

Keyren Tzib has been sentenced to four years and ten months in prison after she was found guilty of attempted murder by High Court Judge Candace Nanton in March. Justice Nanton found Tzib guilty of an attempt on the life of a colleague, Kurt Hyde, as they were returning to the Belize Coast Guard Headquarters in Belize City.

The incident took place on April 6th, 2015.

In court today, Justice Nanton initially set the sentence at thirteen years but deducted seven years due to the nine-year delay in bringing the case to trial. Tzib’s attorney, Arthur Saldivar, sought a non-custodial sentence, but the court considered various factors, including her mental health issues and the use of a deadly weapon.

Saldivar says he will be appealing the conviction.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Detains Belizean

A Belizean man finds himself on the wrong side of the law in the U.S. After serving about half of his thirty-year sentence in prison for a home invasion in Lake County, Illinois, forty-five-year-old Alejandro Requena Junior was released earlier this year.

However, that was not the end of his troubles in the U.S. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) still had its eyes on him.

After his release, ICE issued a detainer, requesting his transfer into federal custody for deportation. ICE located Requena at his workplace in Villa Park, a Chicago suburb, after two weeks of surveillance.

ICE intercepted Requena, who was also in the company of his wife, as he drove off in the vehicle. He was taken into custody for immigration proceedings.

Doris Grant and Alleged Gang Boss are Shot in Belize City

A brazen attempt was made on the lives of Doris Grant and Austin Underwood in the wee small hours of Sunday morning, as they drove along Fairweather Street here in Belize City.  The couple reportedly left from an event they attended on Saturday night and came under gunfire while they were returning home to their Reggae Street address.  Grant has been in the news on several occasions recently, following an arraignment in the lower court for obtaining property by deception.  In the wake of those charges, an operation was conducted by the Belize Police Department during which Grant’s Gardenia property was ransacked by a team of officers.  Her residence in Port Loyola was also raided by police several days later.  Grant, as it has been reported, is the subject of an investigation into a purported land scheme that seemingly netted five million dollars in proceeds from several unsuspecting Mennonite businesspersons.  Notwithstanding these allegations against Grant, Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero says that the shooting that left both Grant and Underwood injured is gang related.

Hilberto Romero

“We are following up on several leads and we do not have all that information available at this time.”

Isani Cayetano

“Do you know if Underwood and Grant were pursued from where they were initially at the event that was being held at the Tavern [parking lot]?”

Hilberto Romero

“We do not know if they were pursued.  All we know is that when they passed in that particular area, the shots were fired at them.”
