Ambulance driver Josh Barrillas has been charged with two counts of manslaughter by negligence and two counts of causing deaths by careless conduct. This is in connection to a traffic accident that occurred on February 20, 2023, near the Beaver Dam Bridge in St. Matthews Village, Cayo, and killed two persons.
The victims, 42-year-old Salvadoran national from Harmonyville and 21-year-old Joana Samoza of Cotton Tree Village, were riding a motorcycle along the George Price Highway when an ambulance rear-ended them. The pair had just finished work, and Ayala was giving Samoza a ride home when the accident occurred. Barrillas was driving the ambulance.
At the time of the incident, Barrillas claimed he did not see the motorcycle in the poorly lit area.
The impact of the collision threw Ayala onto the road, where he died instantly. Samoza was flung over the bridge into the gully below, also resulting in her death.
Both victims were transported to the Western Regional Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
Barrillas was reportedly transporting a patient from Belize City to the Western Regional Hospital at the time of the accident.
Fifty-seven-year-old businessman, Simeon Herrera has been charged in connection with the fatal road traffic accident that claimed the life of nineteen-year-old Tamisha Jeal on September eighth in Santa Elena Town. As we reported, Tamisha and her brother Keenan Wragg were travelling on a motorbike towards San Ignacio when a pickup truck, travelling in the opposite direction, made a sudden turn into their lane. The siblings collided into the vehicle and were flung off the motorbike. Tamisha sustained fatal injuries. On Wednesday, police charged Herrera with one count of manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, failure to give way when changing direction, driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention, driving a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license and driving a motor vehicle not covered by third-party risk insurance. Tamisha’s father, Graham Jeal urged motorists to be more cautious on the nation’s highways.

“In certain cases, I just want to reflect on the life of my daughter. I want to reflect that she lived a good life, a happy life. She was an amazing child like what my wife said. A lot of potential ahead of her for sure. Tragedy does happen in this world and this life, but sometimes tragedy can be avoided by just being a little bit more careful on both sides, being a biker and a driver, because I have the same experience, and actually being a driver of a vehicle. We just need to learn to take more keen attention when we are driving. When we are driving the lives of other people is also in your hands. I explained that to my son and I hope that other people take that into consideration. When we drive on the road, we are not just driving for ourselves, but we are driving for everybody else as well.”
Police have formally charged 57-year-old Simeon Herrera, a businessman from the Cayo District, in connection with the collision that claimed the life of 19-year-old Tamisha Jeal and left her brother, Keenan Wragg, hospitalised.
The accident occurred on Sunday, September 8, at the intersection of the George Price Highway and Carillo Puerto Avenue.
Herrera was charged with multiple offences, including manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, failing to give way when changing direction, driving without due care and attention, operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license, and driving a vehicle not covered by third-party risk insurance.
Tamisha, who had just celebrated her 19th birthday, was an aspiring wildlife veterinarian who graduated at the top of her class from Galen University earlier this year. She and her brother were travelling on a motorcycle when the crash occurred. Despite Keenan’s attempts to shield his sister, both were thrown from the bike, and Tamisha succumbed to her injuries shortly after.
One person is dead, and the fate of another victim is unknown, following an accident between mile thirty-six and thirty-seven along the George Price Highway earlier this afternoon. Around twelve fifteen p.m., a blue Ford Escape was travelling in the direction of Belmopan when it collided with a white van transporting a pair of tourists from Jaguar Paw, severely injuring the passengers inside the vehicle. News Five’s Britney Gordon was on the scene with more details.

Another person is dead following a road traffic accident at midday. Since the beginning of the week, at least three people have died in a fatal collision. Today, while travelling in opposite directions along the George Price Highway, two vehicles collided, injuring five people and killing at least one. Marvin Virula was among the first responders to arrive on the scene. He tells us how he stopped to offer his assistance.

“When I just get here I just see that smoke from the speaker mi di come, I guess it’s because the radiator broke up and stuff. Deh one deh mi look really bad. And ney ones mi still need to be assisted. So they mi have our next pickup truck and a older guy and a younger guy when mi assist to, they bring them out and try to give them shades and so on and actually band one of them up, because of the injury weh he mi had. And afterwards, gone to this vehicle because we realized the person’s still alive in there. And at the time, then we had more people stop by decide to cut the seatbelt because one of the guys, we actually think, there’s one person in there, but when we got closer, we realized two in there, but one motionless, right? I guess, maybe he probably got an impact, but we managed to cut the seatbelt and then give ah wa lee space to make ih breathe.”
The blue Ford Escape was travelling from the direction of Belize City, carrying two passengers, while the white van contained a Belizean tour guide and two American nationals. Virula says that just minutes before the collision, he saw the blue vehicle overtaking him on the road. The sight of a mangled vehicle in the middle of the highway, just moments later, was harrowing.
Marvin Virul
“I actually mi dih drive coming this way too and this vehicle passed me mussi like, after the whole scene and everything, I can’t remember everything exactly how it happened. But I’d say maybe five minutes he mi pass me and I mi frightened to see that he had an accident, and middle of the street the driver, the tour guide, said that what happened is that they, I don’t know if they had a blowout or they just lose control and he gone from one side to the next and he couldn’t avoid it, and that da when he had the impact against he.”
The passenger in the Ford Escape was motionless when responders arrived to assist, while the driver was still breathing. The injuries suffered by the passengers in the van were not life threatening and they were taken to the Western Regional Hospital for treatment. Due to the accident, traffic was backed up for over an hour, stretching the length of mile thirty-six. Truck driver Jorge Escalante was one of the first drivers to encounter the accident on the road.
Jorge Escalante

“When I was coming, me see the big accident and there was some vehicle crossing through the side. But when after come the police, I mih have to slow down and stop. Because, suddenly they hurry and come and put the cones. And so I deh right ya maybe one hour and a half, something like that or more.”
As a truck driver, Escalante remains hyper-vigilant of accidents he may encounter on the road, but he says that an incident of this severity is something that he cannot describe.
Jorge Escalante
“They tek out one person from the vehicle. And they ker the one who was in the middle of the road there. Maybe one alive and one dead.”
Britney Gordon
“So what was that like for you? Seeing that as a driver that drives on these dangerous roads every day, to see first hand, something like that in front of you?
Jorge Escalante
“You can’t explain that because it’s something in the dark. Something just like frighten. I can’t explain that.”
Virula sprang into action to help shortly after realizing that the victims needed assistance. He was fueled by adrenaline due to the intensity of the moment.
Britney Gordon
“How does it feel, to know that you came in such close contact with an accident of this severity?”
Marvin Virula
“Like I tell you, when you run into these things, actually mi gone live and then I cut off my live fi actually start assist. But within that, I di try bring back memory to exactly what point they passed me and I can’t remember, because too much excitement of seeing this thing and it’s sad, to say things like that because as you get there you see the person to bleed a lot. You could ah mi clearly see that the driver mi still alive, but you coulda mi see that ih need assistant like right away.”
Although the cause of the accident is still under investigation, Virula believes that first responders should be stationed along the highways, particularly around times of public celebrations, should accidents like this occur.
Marvin Virula
“Try call police, ambulance and so some other guys they said that they done call and then they come, when then things happen. I don’t know, I believe they should have an ambulance just to linger on, between denyah long stretch right there, where, especially for, like a day when a lot of activities that happen or things like that, because people sometimes tend to be, maybe they noh di drink all day, but they got wah two three alcohol drinks inna ney system. It woulda good fi have, like I said, certain areas just have an ambulance dealing about, that when you had this happen, they should be the first ones fi deh deh. If the police could reach afterwards, but the ambulance are the ones that could assist them people to survive.”
Tragedy struck in the quiet community of San Felipe, Orange Walk, late Monday night, where a deadly collision between a vehicle and a cow claimed one life. Authorities have confirmed that the incident occurred on the main highway, just outside the village. News Five’s Marion Ali reports.

A man lost his life in San Felipe Village, when the motorcycle he was driving on Monday night struck a cow that had wandered onto the road. It happened in this area of the road, where cattle ranches are located. The driver, eighteen-year-old Alvin Guardado, who was traveling alone at the time, died the same night.
Police inform that sometime around eight-thirty on Monday night, Guardado was driving a black Honda one-ninety motorcycle towards San Felipe Village when he ran into a cow in the road about a mile before the village. Guardado was flung to the pavement and suffered severe injuries to his head. He was transported to the hospital before authorities arrived at the scene, but hospital personnel at the Northern Regional Hospital could not save his life. The family, overcome by grief, declined to give interviews on the incident, but information reaching our newsroom is that Guardado was on his way home after visiting his girlfriend when the incident happened.
There are signs warning drivers to be aware of cattle crossing the road in that area. In the past, Orange Walk District has been known for accidents of this nature. Closer to the town itself, buffaloes and are taken to graze near the Philip Goldson Highway and the Bypass have been reported to cause accidents and have become a concern for motorists who use the roads. Marion Ali for News Five.
Police are investigating a fatal road traffic accident that left one person dead and three others injured. The accident occurred between miles 36 and 37 on the George Price Highway. Upon arrival, officers found a white Chrysler van partially off the road and a green Ford Escape overturned with its wheels in the air.
The driver of the van, 27-year-old tour guide Dennis Kevin Perez, told police that while traveling with two foreign passengers, Kelsey Marie O’Connor and Baylee Ann O’Brien, he saw the Ford Escape, driven by 40-year-old Jaime Alberto Correa, overturn and crash into his vehicle. The impact forced Perez’s van off the road, leaving him and his passengers with injuries. Meanwhile, 28-year-old Estevan Chiac, who was a passenger in the Ford Escape, died at the scene. Correa was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in an unconscious state with various injuries. The investigation is ongoing.
At 1:13 p.m., Facebook user Pantha Pinkpantha went live on Facebook to share that there had been a traffic-vehicular collision on mile 37 of the George Price Highway. The incident reportedly happened at around 12:15 p.m.
The video shows an extensively damaged blue Ford Escape in the middle of the highway. The white minivan had extensive damage on its front portion.
When Pantha Pinkpantha asks, “Have you called the police?” Woman responds, “Police is not answering. 911 is not answering.”
Two female tourists were seen on the side of the highway.
When a News 5 team arrived on the scene, emergency personnel were clearing the scene of the accident. So far we have learnt that at least one person was confirmed dead. Everyone was taken to the Western Regional Hospital.
Travelling in the white van were the tourists and the driver.

Nineteen-year-old Tamisha Jeal and her brother Keenan Wragg were travelling towards San Ignacio on a motorbike when it collided into a pickup truck. The vehicle was attempting to make a left turn off the highway when the collision occurred. Both Tamisha and Keenan were flung off the motorbike. Tamisha’s injuries proved fatal. Sadly, her death came one day after her birthday. We spoke with Linda’s mother who is presently with Keenan at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.

“She has just turned nineteen on September seventh, so the family and I were out celebrating with her. My son had just turned twenty-two on September fourth, so we were doing one joint birthday celebration with granny, granddad, all of them. We decided to go home, and they stayed in San Ignacio and the vehicle had a blowout. So, they stayed, and a kind friend lent them the bike. I was getting ready for church, and I turned to my daughter, and I said I love you. I told my son I love you. I said I am going to church. They said, mom we are going to drop back the bike, because they loaned it to us. So, they got on the bike and when I was going into church I saw when the bike passed, and I waved. I didn’t know that would be the last time I would say goodbye to my daughter.”
As Linda Jeal explained it, the accident occurred while her children were on their way to return the motorbike to a friend. Keenan was in the driver’s seat. She says they were a short distance from the friend’s home, and they were not driving with great speed.
Linda Jeal
“He said and the vehicle coming in the opposite, direction, because they were going to San Ignacio, the vehicle coming from the opposite direction just turned and he said, mom I couldn’t stop. He said all I could do was brakes. And when he brakes, he said he used his right hand to grab his sister, but he said, he could hold her. He fell off the bike and she, I don’t know, was knocked by the vehicle. By the time I reached there from church she was already in the ambulance and the ambulance told me that I had to follow. I didn’t get to see her. I went up to the San Ignacio Hospital. I want to thank them; they did a great job. They came out every minute to tell us what was happening. They said they pumped our daughter’s heart for twenty minutes, but they couldn’t revive her.”
Tamisha Jeal graduated from Galen University in its 2024 class with an Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology. She graduated at the top of her class and was volunteering at the Belize Wildlife and Veterinary Clinic just outside of Georgeville. Her rubber boots, raincoat and field hat are all together at the clinic, a reminder to her colleagues of life’s fragility.

“This was definitely her strong interest. She was a first for me and an aspiring Belizean wildlife veterinarian that was going to take my roll eventually.”
Paul Lopez
“Is that unique for Belizeans?”
Dr. Isabelle Paquet- Durand
“Yes, we have few veterinarians in the country still and when it comes to wildlife it is an interest for some, but we don’t have a person yet in Belize that wants to take it on as a full-on profession. Her positive approach to life. She left us daily quotes on our board. So aside from being passionate about the environment and animals which is a rare gem to find she was a lovely human being, always concerned about everybody around here and brining up the spirits all day that she was here.”
Linda Jeal
“She had high honors. They recognized her at Galen. She had her whole future in front of her. W had applied to three different universities for her to further her education. She was the most beautiful, loving, young lady.”
According to Linda Jeal, both of her son’s arms were fractured in the incident. She says he has a great deal of experience with motorbikes and is a member of a biker’s group. Police say a notice of intended prosecution has been served upon both drivers.
“A Nissan Frontier was found at the scene and a Kawasaki motorcycle was seen with extensive damage. Information was that the Kawasaki ran into the pickup and crashed. As a result, Keenan Wragg was rushed to the hospital to receive treatment and he had a passenger with him, namely Tamisha Jeal and she was taken to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. An NIP has been served on both drivers. An investigation continues into this report.”
Motorcycle accidents are among the most common mishaps in Belize, prompting insurance companies to increase premiums for motorcycle owners. On Tuesday afternoon, a surveillance video on Barrack Road captured what could have easily been a deadly collision between a motorcycle and a vehicle. What’s worse is that the passenger, a six-year-old child, was not wearing a helmet and suffered head injuries when she was flung under the vehicle that they crashed into. Thankfully, six-year-old Emily Molina did not suffer any concussion when she was flung off the motorcycle. The Holy Redeemer student was being driven by her father, Silas Molina after he picked her up from school and they were heading on Barrack Road towards the clock. He apparently decided to overtake a vehicle in front of him, but changed his mind when he realized another car was coming in the opposite direction. By then it was too late. Molina’s motorcycle skidded on the street and the father and child were flung off the motorbike. Karen Vernon was at the location when the incident happened and rendered assistance.

Karen Vernon, First Responder “I was on the scene before it happened because I was parked on the side waiting for someone and I heard this loud bang. I’m bracing myself for an impact because I thought, you know, something was going to hit my vehicle. And when I looked in the mirror and start opening the door at the same time, I saw this man on the ground on his back. And I started to, you know, ask him, you know, what he needed and if he was in pain? And he said, my baby, my baby. And when I looked over, there was the car and the child was under the car, inches away from the front wheel. So, I don’t know where people came from, but everybody just came to help. And, you know, like, I’m on the ground trying to get the child out from under the vehicle. And some men came and lifted the vehicle. They actually, like, four, I don’t know. I didn’t see any faces. I just saw men, and they lifted the vehicle. And I got the child from under the vehicle. And she was crying to me, which was a good sign, because she’s crying, she’s conscious. And, you know, I’m asking her where it hurts. There was a gash in her head. She was bleeding from her mouth. And, And, um, she’s asking for her dad, like, where’s my dad, and I told her, your dad is okay, you know, we’ll take care of you, and then we’ll check on your dad.”
