Police Officer and Accomplices Arrested for String of Robberies

On Friday, several individuals were arrested and charged following an extensive investigation into a series of robberies that took place across Western Belize between June and October 2024. They are forty-seven-year-old unemployed Belmopan Jonathan Cruz, twenty-five-year-old labourer Robert Tillet, eighteen-year-old call centre agent Elijah Cruz, and forty-one-year-old police officer Eva Dawson. Businesses targeted by these individuals included Country Meat Products Limited, Gas Tomza, and Lopez Pharmacy. ACP Hilberto Romero provided more details on the arrest.

ACP Hilberto Romero, Regional Commander, Eastern Division

“Based on several robbery reports that were made over a period from June 2024 to present, police have since arrested and charged Jonathan Cruz, forty-seven years for the crime of robbery,  and Jonathan Cruz, along with Eva Dawson, a police officer have jointly been charged with seven counts of conspiracy to commit to robbery.”

Reporter

“Sir, we understand that, the last of those robberies, the one that took place on Wednesday,  twenty-third rd October, that at least one of the robbers had on a police uniform. Is that a concern for you? Are you looking into that element of the crime?”

Hilberto Romero

“Yes, that is a concern or several searches were conducted items were recovered and that is what led to the charges being levied at this time.”

Reporter

“At who’s residence?”

Hilberto Romero

“At the residence of Jonathan Cruz and Eva Dawson.”

Britney Gordon

“So all of these robberies were connected to each other?”

Hilberto Romero

“That is correct.”

Reporter

“So can we get your commentary on the fact that  it was someone within the realms of the department that’s conspiring to commit these serious crimes.”

Hilberto Romero

“Yes, an investigation was curtailed. This police officer has since been charged and taken to court.”

K.H.M.H.A. Workers Union Denounces KHMHA Act Amendment

The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority Workers Union held a press conference today to voice its objections to a recent amendment to the K.H.M.H.A. Act. While a 2021 amendment had granted the union a representative on the hospital’s board, Union President Andrew Baird explained that the new amendment aims to remove the union representative. Instead, the Act now allocates that board seat to a member appointed by the N.T.U.C.B. According to Baird, the N.T.U.C.B. appointee cannot be a member of the hospital staff.

               Andrew Baird

Andrew Baird, President, K.H.M.H.A.W.U

“On the eighteenth of October and amendment to the Karl Heusner Act was done secretly, without any information being passed on to the union for the removal of the KHMHWU representative from the KHMHA board to now be replaced with and NTUCB representative, but that NTUCB representative cannot be a member of the KHMH hospital or staff of the hospital nor a member of the union. IN totality what they are saying to us is that the voices of the workers of the KHMH does not matter to the board anymore. The principle on which we were allowed to the board by this said government who amended the act in 2021, for accountability and transparency and for the workers of the institution to have a say in the institution is now being eroded by the said government. We can only classify that having the union rep of the board has been working in the best interest of the union and staff but not the politicians. This also can only be classified as a direct hit of union busting. Our union has made it clear that it is unacceptable, we will leave no stone unturned to let the government understand that KHMHWU will not give up. We will do what is necessary to ensure our representative remains on the board.

N.T.U.C.B. Does Not Support KHMHA Act Amendment

N.T.U.C.B. Senator Glenfield Denison was also present at today’s press conference. He clarified that the N.T.U.C.B. did not request the responsibility being placed upon it by the amendment. Senator Denison says the proposed legislative change is tantamount to bad governance.

Glenfield Denison, Senator, N.T.U.C.B

“The amendment that was brought in the House in my respectful view can only have one effect and it is to remove your representation from the board. I say that because of two things. We can follow the government as it relates to saying, there is a change of policy now and we want broader workers represented. We can follow them down that road and so we will shift it to the umbrella organization. I will say it categorically, we never ask for that. However, the wording of the amendment is so targeted that it leads me to believe we are no longer legislating for a policy. We must be in the realm of legislating for personalities. So, I ask you to question yourself as to who this sort of amendment will benefit the most. It cannot be you, because you will be removed from knowing what is happening at the highest decision-making body of your employer, the KHMH Authority. So, it really smacks of bad governance.”

K.H.M.H.A.W.U. Asserts C.E.O. Misleading Board in Presentations

The Government of Belize issued a release last week Thursday stating that by having the N.T.U.C.B. on the board, it will ensure that the diverse interests and perspectives of all employees are effectively represented. The release further noted that the inclusion of the N.T.U.C.B. on the Board of Governors is essential for ensuring comprehensive representation, enhancing collective bargaining power, and advocating for the rights and well-being of all employees. Well, Baird says this is the first step the union is taking to raise their objections. When asked what happened inside the boardroom meeting for such a drastic move, he asserted that he has stood up in meetings because the hospital’s C.E.O. has been misleading in her presentation to the board.

Andrew Baird, President, K.H.M.H.A.W.U

“The first thing is to make our position known; hence we are here today to make the government know clearly that the KHMHWU is opposing the amendment of the act, and we are asking for it to remain as it is. There are many ways we can have the government to listen. We start with dialogue, that is why I have texted and asked the prime minister to come to the table so we can discuss the issue at hand. I am the present representative of the board. We wrote to the minister on October eight asking for Dr. Alain Gonzalez to be the new representative of the board and that was by mandate of our membership. Over the past three years there have been several occasions where the CEO has been misleading on presentation to the board. I stood to correct the board that what she is presenting is not so. That is the only reason. There is no other reason.”

NEMO Announces ‘Short-Term Closure of J&W Road’

Heavy rains over the weekend have caused significant disruptions in Belize, affecting various regions. On Sunday, the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) reported that several roads in the rural Orange Walk District were impassable due to ongoing flooding, including the J&W road in Belmopan.

Today, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing and NEMO announced a short-term closure of the J&W Road due to rising waters. The affected section runs between Doyle’s Delight Street and the Egoli Estate entrance. The road is expected to remain closed for the rest of today, October 28, and most of Tuesday, October 29. The closure may extend if conditions do not improve.

The ministry advised all motorists to take the Cemetery Road route to John Saldivar Boulevard during this time.

A severe flood warning is in effect for the Río Hondo at Blue Creek North and Freetown Sibun on the Sibun River. Floodwaters are expected to rise, and an Excessive Rainfall Watch has been issued for the next 12-24 hours nationwide. Urban flooding is anticipated in vulnerable areas.

Senate Testimony Delayed Over Dress Code, Contreras Walks Out

Former UDP Minister of Economic Development Erwin Contreras appeared today before the Senate Special Select Committee in Belmopan. He did so in 3/4 pants after he was ‘picked up’ by Special Branch officers on the strength of a warrant.

The hearing was delayed after committee members realised the type of clothing that Contreras was wearing. Committee members deliberated and decided that Contreras would not be allowed to testify in short pants. A staff of the National Assembly was then sent to get long pants, size 48. He couldn’t find that specific size but brought size 44, which wouldn’t fit Contreras. The employee then brought a size 54, and Contreras made it clear that he will not wear anything that makes him look “bad.” After an hour of trying to solve this issue, the committee members decided for him to appear in short pants.

Contreras was escorted by police. He told committee members that the current matter is before the court and therefore restricted from public discussion. He said that his application is awaiting a decision from the high court, and the chair, through an attorney, has agreed not to issue any warrant or summons until the court renders a decision.

Contreras declined to participate in any actions that could contravene the court order, particularly testifying without his attorney present. He noted that he has a perfected order from the Supreme Court saved on his phone as proof. Contreras reiterated that he would not respond to any enquiries unless advised by his attorney.

Has Shyne Been Kicked Out of the UDP HQ?

This morning Tracy Panton and her supporters stormed the United Democratic Party’s headquarters on Youth for the Future Drive in Belize City.

Panton says she is the interim leader of the UDP following a convention where delegates voted to recall Moses “Shyne” Barrow. Meanwhile, Barrow says he remains leader of the UDP.

Images show UDP supporters taking over the headquarters. During a live interview, Panton said that 66% of the delegates voted in favour of a leadership reset, giving the mandate to her team to lead the UDP, a role she says they fully intend to ulfill. When questioned on whose authority they are inside the UDP headquarters, Panton said that formal authority came from the trustee of the property, Philipa Bailey, who signed a document authorising their occupation. According to Panton, the document was authenticated by a justice of the peace.

Panton explained that when her team arrived, there was no need to eject UDP staff, including those aligned with the Secretariat under Moses “Shyne” Barrow. “We are doing everything we can to unite the United Democratic Party,” Panton said, adding that there was no intention to send anyone home.

Heavy police presence remains at the party’s HQ.

News Five has reached out to Moses “Shyne” Barrow for comment.

‘I Want Her to Heal, Not Just Her Scars and Wounds’

Wilmer Cruz is urgently calling for support for his sister, a 23-year-old woman who endured eight days of captivity and abuse by her husband and his parents. Investigators say she was assaulted, deprived of food, and left in unsanitary conditions without access to basic necessities.

Cruz told News 5 this morning, “I would want someone to help her in the sense of psychologically or mentally, like, help her recover back her mind. Not just her scars and wounds, but someone who would be there for her because, you know, she’s pregnant.”

Cruz pleaded for any assistance and a safe environment for her and her children. “We would like somebody or an organisation who we can team up with so that she can recover good,” he added.

On Friday last week, the accused family members, including 45-year-old Luis Alfredo Tiul Sr., a Guatemalan pastor, and 59-year-old Matilda Games, were both charged with Administering Noxious Matter.

Luis Alfredo Tiul Jr., 24, faced charges of Aggravated Assault and Wounding. His father, Tiul Sr., was also charged with Kidnapping, Aggravated Assault, Wounding, and Sexual Assault. Elizabeth Tiul, 43, a Mexican housewife, was charged with Kidnapping, Wounding, and Aggravated Assault.

Will Former UDP Minister Be Forced To Testify?

Senate Special Select Committee public hearing is expected to resume today at 11 a.m. We are told that on the witness list is former UDP Minister of Investment Erwin Contreras.  We are also told that moves are being made to have Contreras appear before the committee with one report suggesting that he was ‘picked up’ by officers of the Special Branch Unit and expected to be escorted to the George Price Centre where the hearing will take place.

Attorney William Lindo Jr. is representing Contreras.

Back in May, the committee’s public hearing on the Portico “Definitive Agreement” was postponed after Contreras decided not to participate. The committee later expressed disappointment in Contreras’s refusal, especially since he previously acknowledged signing the “Definitive Agreement.”

In a May 29 press statement, the committee said, “The Committee is most disappointed at this information as Mr. Contreras has already admitted that he signed the “Definative Agreement”, which committed the Government and the people of Belize to grant Portico financial concessions worth hundreds of millions of dollars for 30 years. Mr. Contreras is the only person and former Government Minister who can explain why he signed the Agreement.”

This is a developing story.
