Darrell Bradley will seek re-election as Belize City Mayor

Dean Barrow

Today’s press conference started with a focus on Belize City Council matters, and the matter on the top of that list is the political future of Mayor Darrell Bradley. Earlier this week, Bradley was still uncertain whether he would run for a second term in office or would throw his hat into the ring in Caribbean Shores. But finally, long after the deadline has passed, a decision has been made. Prime Minister Dean Barrow made the announcement right at the start of the conference.

“The short answer to the question is mercifully, thankfully, yes. So this afternoon, I am very pleased to be able to say that an understanding has been reached that allows his workshop, Mayor Darrell Bradley to go forward as the United Democratic Party candidate for the mayoralty that comes up at the City Council elections to be held in March of 2015.”

“Prime Minister, you have a one hundred percent committed mayor; we are serious about making the kinds of long-term changes. We are working on a plan to move the city forward in terms of seeing how we can continue our aggressive infrastructure project; to see how we could continue the other good works that have been done and we want to work with the community and to be a part of that change. It is something that I regret in terms of my lack of certainty and when one aspires to any office, one needs to know that they are one hundred percent committed to that office; that is why it has been difficult for me. But now standing before you, I can say to the prime minister and to members of the public that I am one hundred percent committed to doing far more than we have done in this first year and I know that it can be done with this team, with this city council and under the leadership of the Right Honorable Dean Barrow.”

Prime Minister Barrow also announced that three point eight million dollars will be spent on phase two of the Belize City infrastructure project.
