Valley of Peace farmer says Green Tropics not willing to compromise

Guillermo Marroquin

The discussion between Valley of Peace farmers and Green Tropics is ongoing, but from all accounts there has been little progress. Ministry of Agriculture testing has indicated that damage to hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of crops was a result of spraying done by Green Tropics. Green Tropics has rebutted by claiming that the land being used by Valley of Peace farmers is on their property. On Saturday thirty farmers from Valley of Peace, along with their families, were at the ‘Plant Di Corn’ rally in Valley of Peace. Guillermo Marroquin told News Five that for negotiations to work, both parties must be willing to compromise, and Green Tropics apparently isn’t on the same page where that is concerned.

Guillermo Marroquin, Valley of Peace Farmers Association

“If you’re saying this will be done and this will be done…and we suggest something and you don’t accept it, and they you say we will do this, then that’s not peaceful.”

“What’s your opinion of government assistance at this time? Is government helping to assist the negotiations between the two parties?”

Guillermo Marroquin

“At the moment no! Because the company looks like they wanted to drag us out of the government and try to put some pressures to try to reach to a lower agreement. But right now with this, I think that the company won’t be in peaceful negotiations again. They won’t be trying to negotiate.”

“Are you all still planting on the land, one the area that was affected on the land?”

Guillermo Marroquin

“We don’t plan to come out, by any means. We don’t plan to leave our land, because it’s our land.”

To be fair to the Ministry of Agriculture, that body has played largely a facilitation role, allowing both parties to hold open discussions. In this matter between private entities, we are told there is little else that the Ministry is able to do.
