Pharmacy Week 2014; creating awareness on the role of pharmacists

Hortence Humes

As we told you earlier, Pharmacy Week is being celebrated this week, and the provision of quality health care is a focus. It’s mainly about creating awareness of pharmacists and the role they play in the provision of health care. Today Pharmacists Association President Hortence Humes told us about the activities planned this week.

Hortence Humes, President, Pharmacists Association of Belize

“We celebrate our week by going out to the public. We do pharmacy awareness…let them know what we are all about. We do continuing education for the public to let them know what we are all about. Our theme for this year is Pharmacists Advocating for Quality Health Care through Regulation and Continuing Education.”

“Could you give me an idea of some of the activities for Pharmacy Week and who will be participating?”

Hortence Humes

“For the activities it’s both the government and private sector doing it. One of the main things that we are doing is the brown bag day, where we ask patients to come out and bring your medications from home so that we can do consultation with you see which ones are expired and which ones you can continue to take with the medications you currently have because people have been buying medication…oh we are sick so we go to drug stores and we go to the shop and buy these medications and they have interactions so we are doing some consultation with them to ask them to please come in and bring those medications. This is happening countrywide at different health facilities and also at the different pharmacists…the private sector is doing it.”

There will also be fun runs in different parts of the country to promote wellness in the society.
