SATIIM says G.O.B. is corrupt, inept, despotic and discriminatory

“It is the historical trademark of a corrupt, inept, despotic and discriminatory government.” Stern words coming from the Sarstoon Temash Institute for Indigenous Management, in a letter written to Prime Minister Dean Barrow on Tuesday.  SATIIM, which represents the villages of Midway, Conejo, Crique Sarco and Graham Creek, is lashing out at the Government of Belize over a recent decision to waive the expiration date for U.S. Capital Energy’s concession.  The permit, they say, has been declared by the Supreme Court as unlawfully awarded.  According to the buffer communities, G.O.B.’s action verifies its colonial and racially-entrenched mindset towards the indigenous people.  Furthermore, it seeks to revert and sidestep consecutive rulings by the Supreme Court, affirming customary rights.  While PM Barrow has gone on record to say that consultation with the said communities won’t necessarily stop U.S. Capital from proceeding with its work, SATIIM says that it is not, “a good faith effort.” Instead, it is about obtaining their consent.  In the meantime, the communities have wrapped up consultations and have prepared a set of village resolutions.  Despite having written over twenty letters to G.O.B. within the course of a year, requesting a meeting to discuss the way forward, SATIIM fears that another memo would mean nothing.  Both SATIIM and the Maya Leaders Alliance have pledged to monitor closely the activities of U.S. Capital within the Sarstoon Temash National Park.
