4th Annual Belize GIS User Conference

Geographic information systems or GIS, as it is called, is designed to process geographical data of all types.  The technology is driven by location, purpose or application requirements.  Today, the fourth annual symposium to focus on the implementation of GIS in the national development of the country was held at the Biltmore Plaza.  Loretta Palacio, Managing Director of Total Business Solutions Ltd., explains the many uses of geospatial data.

“The purpose of this conference is to bring together all the GIS users in Belize and the public in general, our ESRI partners, our colleagues to come and share, learn the work of GIS users so that even those who are not using it can see it’s application as it relates to overall national development.  When I say national development I mean integrating all the various data sets, creating data from various industries to be able to make better decisions.  How do I break that down?  Simple as emergency management.  We have hurricane shelters, they all have a location.  We have all the communities, the towns, they all have a location.  When we take that in a map and we say let’s look at Silk Grass, it has a location, it has a population.  We will take data from the SIB, the Statistical Institute of Belize, layer it over.  If there is a fire we can analyze it.  We can check how layered the data is and check if that’s in a fire prone area.”

Today’s event saw the participation of several government and non-government agencies.
