Sporting Highlights with James Adderley

Good evening I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday. Week 11 in NEBL Basketball brought a battle royal to San Ignacio where 2 teams with identical records of 9 wins 1 loss each took the court inside Sacred Heart College to determine who would be the undisputed league leader going into week 12 of the 14 game regular season. Of course folks, we must give maximum respect to the Cayo Community who always puts on the best basketball show inside the NEBL and their fan support is indeed off the charts. For the doubters here’s evidence to back up our statement as we pan the fans present. Meanwhile it’s Farron Lauriano of the host team who opens the scoreboard by streaking past Darwin Leslie to lay the left hand for 2. For the Tigersharks Jamal Kelly gets them going, stealing this intended pass to Travis Lennan from Kurt Burgess and beats everybody down court to earn 3 points the old fashioned way. Kelly would score 13 of San Pedro’s 27 1st half points but would not score in the 2nd half. Nevertheless this put back by Farron Lauriano off the Lennan miss gives the Ballaz a 15-9 lead at the end of the 1st. We’re in early 2nd quarter action when Darwin Leslie steals the ball from Kurt Burgess and finds the unattended Michael Adams who mashes it home. Adams would be denied the 2 doubles by 1 rebound after posting 11 points 9 rebounds in the ballgame. For a while it appears the visitors had no answer for Farron Lauriano who turns on Lewis Peterson for 2 of his 31 game points to go along with a crucial 15 rebounds.

Richard Troyer then penetrates through the heart of the Tigersharks’ defense for the layup. Troyer posted 2 doubles of 17 points 11 rebounds. You remember Jamal Kelly well this is one of his 2 triples he landed out of 5 taken in the ballgame and he keeps San Pedro within striking distance going to the half. However Farron Lauriano continues to dominate when he receives this long pass from Richard Troyer for 2 more points. And at the half Cayo Western Ballaz still hold a 6 point lead. So we go to the 3rd and its Farron Lauriano striking the 1st blow for the Ballaz to give them an 8 point lead. Make it a 10 point lead when Richard Troyer leads Lennan who misses the easy 2 but Troyer follows up with the put back. At the other end Darwin Leslie is fed by Tyrone Edwards, Leslie then takes Lauriano with ease for 2 of his 12 game points and also pulled 7 rebounds. When Michael Adams misses this layup Kurt Burgess steals the rebound against the big man and would chair the boards with 20 rebounds plus picked up 9 points in the process. Down by 8 Winston Pratt decides to take control of things as he takes this ball the length of the court to earn 3 points the old fashioned way. At the end of the 3rd the Ballaz lead is still six. Immediately into the 4th Winston Pratt attacks to get 2 of his 17 points and would also pull 17 rebounds to lead the Tigersharks that states local category. With 4:45 remaining in the ballgame Pratt finds Louis Peterson who scores a big bucket to cut the lead to 1.

On the very next press, it’s Darwin Leslie who gives San Pedro Tigersharks the lead with this banker off the glass. Leslie then turns provider for Winston Pratt who lands this big time triple to give San Pedro a 4 point lead. At the juncture both No Limits Coach and Coach Karim Juan need to be pacified as both team officials were up in arms. However the Tigersharks would win this ballgame 70 to 65 from the free throw line in the final 2 minutes of the frantic fouling by Cayo Western Ballaz. We must say this is the best NEBL match up so far this season. Looking to week 12 it’s another big one coming this Friday at Big Birds Isle Belize City No Limit faces Cayo Western Ballaz in search for revenge. Dangriga heads to Corozal, Orange Walk will face Toledo Diplomats at P.G. and the Belmopan Bandits will sail to San Pedro. Meanwhile in other week 11 results Belize City No Limit devastated Toledo Diplomats 105 to 46, Dangriga Warriors crushed OW Running Rebels while Belmopan Bandits survived in an 83-81 final score against Corozal Heats.

In football news play in the PLB closing season Wednesday night saw Police United doubling the B.D.F. 2 to 1, F.C Belize also beat Paradise Freedom Fighters by that same score while Belmopan Bandits and San Ignacio rallied to a scoreless draw. In the meantime regular season play concludes this Wednesday night with all matches beginning at 8:30 P.M. Paradise Freedom Fighters will visit Verdes at Benque to finish off tings. The Bandits will conclude at the Carl Ramos against the B.D.F. and Police will host San Ignacio United at the Isidoro Beaton.

Folks it’s unlikely these matches will affect layoffs. Police leads with 25 points; Verdes has 18, the Bandits 18 and B.D.F. 16 going into Wednesday night. F.C. Belize has 12 while Paradise Freedom Fighters and San Ignacio show 9 apiece. None of the 3 teams can make 16 points. Thus this final schedule will only determine the seeding for Verdes, Belmopan and the B.D.F. In other football news the Lady Jaguars, our national female football team played a friendly against Puma of Chetumal which they won in a 2 -1  score on goals from Tursha Pollard and Curby Rhaburn. Our team travels on May 17th to play in the UNCAF elimination for the World Cup at Guatemala.

We also took in the finals in the Association of Institution of Belize National Football Tournament featuring Ecumenical Junior College and Escuela Mexico. Some 19 minutes in Byron Chavez set table perfectly for Otis Smith beating goalkeeper John Uh who comes off his line, to score into an empty goal. Otis Smith then gets this chance to make it a 2 – nil score instead he applies for a pilot license. So we go to 2nd half and the section picks up in the 1st minute of play, Aldain Toledano comes up with the steal and then deals to Elkin Harris who beats Aidan Arana with the right foot punch to tie the score at 1 apiece. 5 minutes later Ismael picks out Aldain Toledano who gives Escuela Mexico a 2- 1 lead. Ecumenical wouldn’t quit people – Otis Smith launches this cruel left foot bomb that bounces off the horizontal bar to Shanty Castillo who falls victim to good defensive play from Leonel Chi but the loose ball reaches Emory Gill who ties the ballgame at 2 apiece. The game winner comes in the warning moment of the match when Byron Chavez picks out Otis Smith off the corner kick and Smith’s header shakes the net for his 2nd of the match and the 3 – 2 final score. We say congratulations to Ecumenical Junior College. In the final side we say congrats to UB to bet Independence Junior College 2 – zip to grab the ATLIB title.

Finally folks the Weekend Warriors Cycle race staged yesterday on the Boom circuit brought out some 40 riders this Sunday morning as it left Leslie’s Imports. At the Hattieville roundabout the pelathon remained somewhat compact as it rolled through. On the way back on the Boom Bridge we find a lead pack of 6 riders including David Pollard, Daniel Cano, Colin Maheia, Mark Reid, Ernest Meighan and invitee Orson Butler. At Hattieville the lead 6 continue this dominance as they head to Leslies Imports. Around mile 6 the once golden, 2 time Cross Country Champion Ernest Meighan decides to go it alone so he steps on the pedal. That run takes the Santino’s rider to an unchallenged win in 2 hours 15 minutes 35 seconds for the 50 mile ride. Orson Butler then holds off David Pollard of FT Williams to take 2nd place, Daniel Cano of Digicell grabs 4th place, Colin Maheia of FT Williams takes 5th while Mark Reid rounds out the top 6. IN the B Class Andrew Vasquez was 1st, Santino Castillo of Santino’s 2nd and 3rd was Gilharry. In the C class Herwald Humes, Carlo Marin and Nelson Zyden finishes 1, 2, 3 in that order.
