Businessman taken to court for outstanding GST debt

Darrell Carter

Another businessman was before the court today. Darrell Carter of Carter’s Upholstery located on Cemetery Road was taken to court by the GST in respect of an outstanding bill amounting to twenty-three thousand eight hundred and forty-seven dollars. Carter was picked up on Monday and spent the night at the Queen Street lock up because he could not meet a six thousand dollar payment that the GST required to lift a committal order. This morning, he returned to the Magistrate Court, but fortunately for him, businessmen Winston Smiling and Troy Gabb made payments and Carter was free to go. In August 2013, Carter was ordered to pay eleven thousand dollars of a debt, but he had only paid seven thousand which put him in arrears of more than sixteen thousand dollars.  The court also found on Monday that he had an outstanding assessment of over eight hundred dollars. Carter told the magistrate that his business suffered a fire which set him back and that he has been making payments on a weekly basis, but not to GST. Carter said that the cash is just not there.
