The senseless murder of a 57 year old Rhaburn Alley resident

The second murder took place hours later on Saturday night. Fifty-seven year old Alfonso Cruz of Rhaburn’s Alley, Belize City was shot to the left side of the chest and left lower back.  While a motive has not been determined, it is known Cruz was hanging out in his own yard at Rhaburn’s Alley, when a lone gun man rode up on a bicycle and opened fire. While Cruz was hit numerous times, he managed to flee inside his house, but did not survive the gun blasts. Duane Moody has a report.

Fifty-seven year old Alfonso Cruz was inside his yard when a lone gunman on bicycle rode down Rhaburn Alley and fired a single shot that caught him to the chest. The incident occurred sometime around ten p.m. on Saturday night.

“I was at home when I got the tragic news about my uncle; only his wife was home and she was in the house sleeping…he was outside in the yard. No one really knows what happened…all they heard was the gunshot and he ruining inside saying he got shot. We are waiting for police to finish their investigation so we can get more information and get down to the bottom of it because we also are waiting for some information.”


Cruz, who is well known in the neighborhood, operated heavy duty machinery and would always be sitting on this old refrigerator inside his yard. After being shot, he ran for cover inside his home, but collapse shortly after. He was rushed to the K.H.M.H., but was pronounced dead on arrival. The motive for his killing is unknown.

“He is not a person going out through the alley or hanging out….he always stays home. He is not a violent person; he is always peaceful and humble so ih got everybody shaken up right now. Nobody can’t understand why this happen.”

“It is believed that killer knew that was the person they wanted to kill?”

“From the information gathering off the street, I think it is just an act of ignorance that took my uncle’s life.”

“Did he have any enemies; anybody that would want to see him dead?”

“No, not a person we could think about because he is well liked around his neighborhood, his community. Everyone likes him. He does not have a record from he lives on this earth; he is very humble and peaceful.”

    This man deserves a reward-he caught people the police could not catch-he is a hardworking humble man who got so mad at thieves, he protected his property. Remember when Sikaffy also shot and killed 2 thieves in the back-he was not arrested-a newspaper said to give him a medal. Why is this poor man charged for protecting his property. At minimum it should be manslaughter as he was provoked as anyone in Belize nowadays would be. Get with it DPP and Police.
