Attorney says farm owner will be trapped in prison for years

Edison Johnson

In just a matter of seconds on Friday, Edison Johnson’s life was changed for all time. He is now an inmate at the Belize Central Prison, charged with two counts of murder. Orange Walk Police say those charges were levied on the advice of the D.P.P.’s office, so it seems improbable at this time that the charge would be reduced to manslaughter or dropped altogether. Barring that, Johnson is now in the system, and his attorney Hubert Elrington told News Five that he will likely be trapped there for the foreseeable future.

Hubert Elrington, Attorney of Edison Johnson

“In Belmopan, in a similar murder trial, Freddy Fernandez was acquitted on a no case submission after being in prison for five years. The judge found that there was not even preliminary evidence that he had committed murder. But he spent five years in prison. I’d just come from that case when I was called to come up here Friday evening.”

“Sir is there anything that can be done to ensure that something like that does not happen. If the D.P.P. does not reduce the charge to manslaughter, are we looking at another prolonged remand for Mr. Johnson?”

Hubert Elrington

“It can be another five years. There are murder cases before the court that have not come to a conclusion…there has not been a trial according to law for twelve years…not only one of them, more than one of them…twelve years have gone – not on a conviction, but on remand. The persons have been awaiting trial.”

Elrington says he believes that late Sunday night his client gave a witness statement, and he is hopeful that may sway the office of the D.P.P.  It’s a remote hope, but it is all the family of Edison Johnson has at this time.
