Sea pirates arraigned for aggravated assault with firearm

Giovanni Murrillo

Three Belize City pirates were arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court for two counts each of Aggravated Assault with a Firearm.  They are Lionel Emmanuel Sedacy, Giovanni Murrillo, and Everal Teck Junior.  The trio has been in police custody since last Thursday after they were apprehended for a shootout with the Belize Coast Guard Team. The three pirates pleaded not guilty, they were denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison until June thirteenth 2014. Sedacy, however, was read additional charges for fisheries offenses. That’s because according to the Fisheries Department, he was found in possession of four hawksbill sea turtles and thirty-one lobsters at his home on Amara Avenue.

In pleading guilty to the two fisheries offenses, he asked the court for leniency saying he had children to care for.  Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser imposed a non-custodial sentence and fined him for both charges in this manner—six hundred and twenty dollars for the lobsters and four thousand dollars for the sea turtles.   Sedacy was along with Teck Junior and Murrillo were detained on Thursday; the trio was robbing a group of five fishermen when they were intercepted by the coast guard some twenty miles South East from Belize City. A shoot-out ensued where the pirates opened fire on the Coast Guard’s personnel. While they managed to escape, the Coast Guard caught up with them at Middle Long Caye and brought them into Belize City.
