Senior immigration officer chastises Director Maria Marin

Minister Hulse’s call to a talk show on Wednesday morning was in response to a previous Belizean caller who was upset at the turn-around and endless hassles to get a passport. His comments didn’t go unnoticed, and News Five has received a copy of a letter sent to Director Maria Marin by a very senior immigration officer. In that letter, the officer tells Marin that the comments by Hulse have stirred discontent among his senior staff. The officer, who prefers to remain anonymous, writes that Minister Hulse “made a comment that was both insulting in nature and revealed that he is completely devoid of the problems we are presently experiencing with the passport production process.” The officer writes that the comment by Hulse suggests that the reason for hardship in Belizeans getting a passport is because no bribes are being paid. He refutes that outright, stating that, “this office has on multiple occasions attempted to address the immaterial, nonsensical requirements imposed on the Belizean nationals for their passports applications.  The meeting held on Friday fourth April, 2014, is a testament to the frustration other OICs feel as it relates to the requirements to produce the passports submitted from their various stations.  We all know that it is the Belmopan Office that produces these passports and are the ones who keep refusing to process applications for whatever reason they find it convenient.  This is the reality that should be shared with the Honourable Minister.” There is more, but we end with a very pointed comment by the senior officer, that the so-called management team should be comprised of technical people, instead of just the Minister, his C.E.O. and his Director.

as far as i have seen the immigration department here is the worst goverment agency i have ever had to deal with. i have been repeatably lied to almost every time i go in there. burn that whole place down if i had a say.

I agree on the attitude. These immigration people in Belmopan and especially at the north border have an attitude as if they are doing you a favor. They forget they are public officers to serve the public and at all times must be welcoming. In some cases even when you smile with them they give you that ignorant attitude. I recall one time an officer of immigration at the north border (Santa Elena) said ” I am not teething laughing with you”, what an ignorant attitude by that male immigration officer that has years of service. Hope this said does not fall on deaf years and actions be taken.
