2 students from the Escuela Mexico drown in the Macal River

A field trip ended tragically this afternoon; two students from Escuela Secundaria Tecnica Mexico in the Corozal District have drowned in the Macal River. The body of Edgar Pook was the first to be retrieved at around four-forty-five, while the body of the female student was recovered approximately an hour later. The drowning victims were among a group of students on a class trip to the Che Chem Ha Cave in Benque Viejo. They set out early this morning from the school and had finished a day of hiking at the cave. It was on their way back that they stopped near the low lying bridge in the Twin Town of San Ignacio and Santa Elena to take a swim in the river. But unfortunately, the two went under and did not resurface. For the past two weeks, water levels in the Macal have been fairly low, but today, it fluctuated causing strong currents. The scene at the river bank is filled with grief as students and teachers mourn the loss of their friends and classmates and find comfort among each other. A team of tour guides, police and other residents searched for the missing students. Deputy O.C. of San Ignacio Police, Inspector Reymundo Reyes, spoke with News Five a few minutes ago.

“The information is that sometime around four P.M. information received at the station that a male person and a female was swimming on the Macal River, that would be close to the board bridge that link San Ignacio and Santa Elena. And apparently the current got them and they disappeared under the water. Based on that police visited the area and minutes after the body of the male person was retrieved from the water , we attempt to do CPR on him but apparently it was too late, so he was immediately transported to the Hospital morgue here in San Ignacio and about an hour after the body of the female was also retrieved from the water and both seem to have drowned. At this point I do not want to release the name of the student. They are both students from the Escuela Secondaria Mexico from Corozal district but I believe we need to inform the parents first.”

“In speaking with the teachers or the other adults on this trip, what are they saying in terms of what may have transpired?”

Via Phone: Insp. Reymundo Reyes

“Well the purpose of the trip was to visit a ruin here in the Cayo district but on the way back they decided to stop and let the students eat or something and so forth but at the same time some of them decided to get into the water.

My deepest condolences to the families affected, my heart and thoughts are with them. I feel their pain as I have my kid that attends this school and he went on the trip as well. Parents put the lives of their kids in the hands of these teachers who we think are responsible and will look after them. unfortunately that was not the case in this scenario. As a parent I did my part as most parents did to caution their children to be careful and obey their teachers or else they will never go back on another school trip.
Having said that, I trust none of those teachers with the life of my kid and he will never go back in any school trips planned by escuela mexico. Its a necessary evil {Kant Theory} but I prefer that than to lose my only kid to a bunch of irresponsible teachers. something needs to be done about this so it never happens again to any of our learning institutions in this country. THE DEATH OF NOT ONE BUT TWO STUDENTS IS UTTERLY OUTRAGEOUS.

I would blame partly the teachers for stopping at a no agenda place for that trip, youths are youths they are risk takers and while dealing with them it’s a huge responsibility. So the teachers involved should help now the family with burial expenses or suspended for a time frame. When we sign a note slip for trips we expect the teachers responsibility very strong. Last time on the news a kid drop from some and got seriously hurt after reaching home they found out about it. when the teachers should have alerted the parents at least. Condolence tot he families of the students.

My condolences to the family. @Jaime, I can feel your anger also but the school planned a field trip, a hiking trip in the middle of a very hot day, a swim by the river does not sound out of the way. I live on an island and I know the sea and I am not afraid of it but I do not know the river, so I respect the river, I only stay on the edges, never dive down. These children did not know this part of the river, so they should have taken due care, being brave and swimming to the middle and diving down may be something that teachers could not control. Therefore lets teach our children how to properly swim any river. It all starts at home.

It is easy to place blame Belizean Pride your comments were pretty irresponsible: just back off the teachers! I guess in your opinion they should not have stopped for bathroom or food?

These students are not infants they need to take some responsibility for their actions for the most part. When they make poor decisions they will suffer the consequences. Sad, very sad!

  5. Alex Briceno says:

the teacher are not to be blame. parents need to understand that your child may be good infront of you and be totally different when away from you. Disciple begins at home not at school with the teachers.
