Attorney Michael Peyrefitte maintains that SATIIM wants money

Michael Peyrefitte

Despite being censured, Peyrefitte firmly stands his ground.  According to the lawyer, what was said a week ago is the truth of the matter, a position to which he remains unwavering.

Michael Peyrefitte, Attorney for U.S. Capital

“You know me, I speak the truth and I speak truth to power, especially the all powerful Maya.  If they find those [remarks] to be disrespectful or disparaging, that’s his interpretation of it.  I know from sitting down with them on several occasions in meeting that I’ve been present, the only concern is about money.  The only concern is about what portion of the pie they would receive.  We were at the environmental impact assessment meeting in Sundaywood and a thousand people were there and over a hundred got up to speak and all they spoke about was economic benefits that they wanted to receive from the company.  That’s all they have ever spoken about and, like the judge said in her judgment, Mr. Courtenay was not asking for any structural injunction.  In other words then, Mr. Courtenay was not saying, “we don’t want U.S. Capital to drill.”  So the Mayas have also said, Greg Ch’oc and other leaders have said to us that they are not against drilling for oil.  But naturally when the conversations come and I say look, well then what is it that you are against, it always comes up to economic benefits for the Mayan community.  Let me say this, there is no shame in that.  If activities are going to be occurring in your communities it is quite legitimate for you to say well, how will we benefit materially.  There’s no problem with that.  My problem with the Mayan leadership is that they have never been full and frank and can’t answer straight questions.  And you talk about disrespectful and disparaging remarks, have you heard what the Maya leaders have said about U.S. Capital?  Don‘t you think those are disrespectful and disparaging?  I don‘t think speaking the truth is disrespectful nor disparaging and I stand by my comments that I made.”

So as we said, the situation is tense because while the court ruling was in favor of SATIIM, the oil company maintains that it will proceed with oil exploration activities.

Let me get this right. Michael Peyrefitte and U.S. Capital have no interest in money? Wow! This is enlightening! This case underscores a point I have always made. Rural Belize needs to field educated people to represent them. Clearly, Mr. Peyrefitte finds it impossible to accept that some “district people” beat a city-cat at his own game. So, he underscores that they are well-spoken and educated and want their cut. So, what!! Clearly, he expected to run into some english-mangling illiterates. But they have wised up over the years! It reflects the long, arrogant sense of entitlement that Belize City’s representatives have long held over the country. Remember all of our Prime Ministers have been from Belize City! Finally, the educated Mayas of SATIIM have levelled the playing and gotten justice. Otherwise, they will end up like the Indians in the U.S.A. : broke, depressed, alcoholic, and suicidal. Thank u SATIIM! Rural Belize, please take note.

And the attorney doesn’t want money? It’s sad how these attorneys easily sell their soul to foreigners in the name of “justice”. What a bunch of nonsense.

  4. Elgin Martinez says:

Stop attacking the Mayan people, attack the issue. In my opinion Greg Choc has a more sound argument than Peyrefitte. In the Legal Profession Peyrefitte’s argument would be referred to as “AD HOMINEM” ABUSIVE

  5. punkgial says:
