City Hall remains in arrears to sanitation company

Darrell Bradley

As we told you, last year the Mayor narrowly dodged contempt proceedings which might have landed him behind bars. He and Belize Waste Control were able to reach a settlement on a judgment of two point two million dollars. In a nutshell, BWC agreed to write-off one million dollars, and the Mayor agreed to put certain enforcement procedures in place which would benefit the company. It’s a relatively standard agreement – only while the company kept its part of the contract, Mayor Bradley hasn’t. So where that settlement is concerned, the Mayor could be facing some major migraine headaches very soon.

Darrell Bradley, Mayor, Belize City

“The judgment that was owed to them which was two point two million dollars…we sat down with them, we negotiated a one million dollar write-off and we paid them one point two million dollars. That was money that we had to find out of our recurrent income and we paid that off. That was a judgment that was outstanding for ten years.”

“The Council is going to be served with another claim for the breach of that agreement. There continues to be people picking up garbage around this city for recycling…breaching of the contract, and this same Mayor signed on the dotted line saying that he was going to stop it. This is the same Mayor who said that he was going to stop other people picking up garbage in hot spots and give it to Waste Control. He has not fulfilled that. We have instructions to commence another claim against the Mayor for his continued breach. It seems to me that he is comfortable receiving litigation. We will have to do that, and it seems that the only way he performs is when he is on the verge of imprisonment. Regrettably that’s where we are with him.”

There is another report, though unconfirmed, that City Hall is also indebted to Belize Maintenance Limited for millions of dollars.
