55 year old man charged with theft
A fifty-five year old man was before the court today to answer to the charge of Theft. He is accused of stealing nine hundred and fifty dollars worth of items from Paula Almendarez. Percival Usher, a resident of Central American Boulevard, appeared before Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith and was arraigned on a single charge of Theft. Allegations are that on Sunday, March thirtieth, he dishonestly appropriated a car battery, a CD deck and a gold earring from Almendarez. In court this morning, Usher who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to the charge, but various outstanding fines from previous convictions came back to haunt him. The records show that Usher owes the court about four hundred and forty-five dollars in fines going back to 1999. Usher was offered bail of five hundred dollars, but it would not be processed until he has paid the outstanding fines.
Give the man “justice” based on his current crime. Don’t use extraneous matters to bear on the case to decide his present guilt. Let’s not use obfuscating “colonial” tricks to detain and convict anyone. Stare Decis.
