A man is found dead in a latrine at the Guinea Grass Primary School

Azael Gomez

Up north in the village of Guinea Grass, the family of Azael Gomez is grieving his untimely and mysterious death. Gomez was last seen alive on Saturday morning; a search party combed the area, but could not locate the missing man. But this morning, Gomez’s body was found in a latrine by a student at the local primary school which had to be closed for the day because of the circumstances.  Police say they cannot determine what caused his death. Isani Cayetano reports.

A desperate search for thirty-year-old Azael Gomez, a resident of Guinea Grass,  who was last seen by family and friends on Saturday, has resulted in tragedy.  His lifeless body, already in an advanced state of decomposition, was slumped inside a cramped restroom.   News of the gruesome discovery spread across the village very rapidly.  Gomez’s mother was at the police station in Orange Walk Town filing a missing person’s report when she was informed of the ghastly encounter.

“He came out from Friday night and he didn’t reach home…  He didn’t reach home on Saturday night either.  [The] whole day he spent in the street, so we decided yesterday to come out and look for him.”

The search led the party to various places within the community where Gomez would normally frequent.  The effort to locate him, however, proved futile.  Shortly before nine o’clock this morning, a student who had gone to use the facility stumbled upon the corpse.

“He said they found a young boy down da di school grounds.  Ah tell ahn where?  And so I run deh and when I get there dehn tell me yes, it is your nephew.  That’s all that dehn tell me and it was true that he is the one.  I don’t know what has been taking place.”

Sadly, the cause of his demise remains unknown.  While there were reportedly no signs of physical abuse on his body, there was what is believed to be a wound to the side of the head which may have been the result of a fall inside the latrine.  That is one of several theories floating around the village.

“Do you guys believe that he may have been the victim of some kind of foul play or do you believe that he may have suffered a natural death in the latrine?”

“Well they told us, we meet some friends and they told us that he was right by the front of the Adventist Church with a friend…  He was there drinking so a cousin of his wife said that she saw him when he came out from there but dehn noh sih ahn again.”

Because of the state in which Gomez’s remains were found an autopsy had to be conducted at a remote location to determine the cause of death.  His family however, believes that the body was just being taken away to be abandoned.

“Well they just told me that dehn wahn ker he da wahn place in the canefield and they will leave his body there.  He’s not a dog fu mek deh ker my son eena cane field and left his body there with police to mind.  No, I don’t want that.  I want mek dehn ker ahn da di hospital and put ahn eena di freezer fu mek dehn do wahn autopsy on his body [to find out] what killed him.  That I want.  I noh want mek dehn ker ahn an lef ahn deh.”

Up to news time police were still unable to determine the cause of Gomez’s death. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
