Honduran National killed in traffic accident in the City

There were various traffic accidents over the weekend, at least five, in the Belize District alone; one was fatal. A Honduran national of Iguana Street Extension, Jose Angel Martinez, was riding his bicycle near the Plum Tree taxi stand at the western entrance of the City on Saturday afternoon. Near the pedestrian ramp, Martinez fell off his bike at the same time a dump truck was approaching. Martinez attempted to get out of harm’s way, but was unsuccessful and the ten wheeler truck ran over his head killing him instantly. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

“Upon arrival they noticed a Hispanic male person lying face down beneath a ten-wheeler dump truck that was driven at the time by one Gilbert Wade of a West Lake Community address. Our investigation has revealed that upon reaching the pedestrian ramp, Mister Wade observed that no one was in front of him so he proceeded. Upon proceeding, his sideman informed him that he knocked down a male person. Our initial investigation is revealing that this said male person was riding contrary to traffic and upon reaching in front of the dump truck; he lost control and fell in front of the dump truck causing the dump truck to run over his head.”

The driver of the dump truck, Gilbert Wade, has since been served with a notice of intended prosecution. Duane Moody for News Five.

The body of Martinez is currently awaiting a post mortem examination. Police say that the results will determine whether or not Martinez was intoxicated.
