Sports Monday with James Adderley

Good evening, I’m James Adderly and this is Sports Monday.

Week 7 brought up the halfway mark in the National Elite Basketball League so we journeyed to Orange Walk Saturday night where the Running Rebels were looking for only its 2nd season win against league leading San Pedro Tigersharks. A foot that looked much like a bridge too far going in. At the half tip off we got out first look at the 6 feet 11 inches Michael Adams brought in by the Tigersharks as he jumped against the OW big man Javier Guiterrez. The 1st bucket of the ballgame comes from Tyrone Baptist with this nice penetration to bank it off the backboard for two, unfortunately it would be his only points of the Tigersharks. Another player who started off bright is veteran, Rico Black who hit the first triple of the match but could not duplicate it again and would finish with only 4 points. In the meantime folks Winston Pratt helped spark as San Pedro run by marching through the OW defense to go left for 2 points and would put up a subpar 15 points tonight. Now watch Tyrone Baptist come up with a pin point pass to the indefatigable Randy Usher and despite heavy contact from Winston Pratt comes up with the bucket and would come up with 3 points the old fashioned way. At half the Running Rebels are down 18 to 17. In need of points San Pedro turns to Jamal Kelly who banks it off the glass for two of his 16 points in the 2nd quarter.

On this trip down court Kelly wants 3; Kelly gets 3 and tallies 7 points in the quarter. Nevertheless the little man who leads the league in scoring continues to slice up the San Pedro defense and sinks this difficult 2 to get OW within 2 with some 4 minutes remaining in the 2nd quarter. John Diaz then threads the needle to Ian Carcamo who sinks 2 of his 6 points and at the half OW Running Rebels lead 34 to 25. Half way through the 3rd quarter Omar Tesecum picks up this loose ball and goes under the arms of Michael Adams score 2 of his 12 game points and keep the 7 point lead for OW. It’s more OW when Usher hooks up Tesecum who eludes Tyrone Edwards for 2. However here comes the Tigersharks. Tyronne Edwards wants 3 gets none but Michael Adams picks up the loose ball to power this slam for 2 points and rebounds 3 points the hard way. Off this missed shot by Marcel Orosco, Michael Adams strongs the rebound to mask it home for 2 more points and would finish with the team high points and the game high of 18 rebounds. Adams then hooks up with Darwin Leslie who raises up for 3 big points and would finish with 12 game points.

Its Tyronne Edwards again with the missed three and Michael Adams with the put back as the Tigersharks take a 4 point lead. Edwards fakes the 3 on the press and then deals to Jamal Kelly fresh off the back and he hits noting but cotton for 3 to extend the lead. Kelly then caps a San Pedro 16 – 2 run in the 3rd quarter with this pretty baseline. As the Tigersharks take a 9 point lead into the 4th quarter. The Rebels are looking to stage a contact when Winston Pratt misses this put up; Keith Dust then picks up the rebounds to earn 2 points. Randy Usher won’t quit and keeps his team within striking distance as he successfully goes to the left hand. However this penetration and finish by Winston Pratt snuffs out the fire. As the San Pedro Tigersharks go on to post the 73 – 60 big W to remain atop the standings at the halfway point. In other results from week 7; Cayo Western Ballaz kept pace with San Pedro by beating Belmopan Bandits 58 to 46, Belize City No Limit handled the Dangriga Culture Warriors in a 66 to 53 final score and down south it was payback time as the Toledo Diplomats cooled off the Corozal Heats 88 to 86 in overtime play. Looking to week 8 Orange Walk Running Rebels will host Belize City Smart No Limit, Corozal Heats will get a visit from San Pedro Tigersharks, Western Ballaz travel to Dangriga Culture Warriors and Toledo Diplomats will be at home against Belmopan Bandits.

In football news we head to the MCC grounds where week 4 play saw FC Belize taking aim at the Belmopan Bandits yesterday as the PLB Closing Tournament continues to roll. The visitors open up fast as Denmark Casey leads Brandon Peyrefitte with this wonderful pass that is only foiled by the rapidity by which goalkeeper Glenford Chimilio comes off his line after sensing the danger. FC Belize responds with this center from Ryan Simpson off the left side to Crawford who blows what was a really good chance. Jarret Davis then gets this look at goal but the left foot strike in right at the goal. It’s a moment fraught with danger when Elroy Kuylen launches this low cruise missile that sees the FC goalkeeper come up with a big time save. Meanwhile folks Glenford Chimilio tries twice on this routine clearance – 1st he gift the ball to the lurking Brandon Peyrefitte and then misfires on his 2nd attempt to clear, striking down Peyrefitte for which the referee rightly rules penalty. The veteran Bernardez gets the call and finds the far corner to give Belmopan Bandits a 1 – zip lead 35 minutes in. FC Belize immediately looks for the tie when Raymond Reid successfully battles for possession to set up Lincoln Wilshire whose potent shot is repeated by goalkeeper Woodrow West. Just before the half expires Brandon Peyrefitte fires this shot at goal that veers outside the goal at the last second. So we go to the 2nd half as Elroy Kuylen targets Bernardez with this push across the goal mouth but Bernardez finds himself a step behind. Hey folks this is as ugly as it gets in football – David Madrid and Ryan Simpson are battling for possession when Simpson unleashes this high kick nowhere near the ball and gets away by only receiving a yellow card for a very dangerous play. Madrid was taken immediately to the hospital. In the meantime this wonderful teamwork when Elroy Kuylen deals to Bernardez who unselfishly sets up Jerome James and he pushes it into the near corner at the 89th minute to secure the 2 – zip big W for Belmopan Bandits. In other results for week 4, Police United handcuffed Verdes F.C. 1 – zip and Paradise Freedom Fighter and San Ignacio United settled for a scoreless draw. On Wednesday night week 3 play saw Belmopan Bandits and Police draw nil – nil, B.D.F. doubled FC Belize 4 – 2 and Verdes footed San Ignacio 2 – nothing.

  1. Michael says:

I hear there is a rumor that the San Pedro Tigersharks might become the next new team in the National Basketball Association in the United States. I also hear that LeBron James is interested in playing for them. This is all just rumor at this point and is in no way a fact yet.
