Unions call for a boycott of Bowen products

The Belize Communications Workers’ Union, the Association of Public Service Senior Managers and the National Trade Union Congress of Belize have joined to issue a fiery release aimed at local industrial giant, the Bowen and Bowen Group of Companies. On March fifth, the company terminated thirteen employees who did not report to work, as a form of protest against new terms of employment and benefits. Since then the workers and the company have been caught up in negotiations facilitated by the Labour Department, but the very strongly worded unions’ release certainly ups the ante. In the release, the unions support the action by the workers to stay home from work, stating that the circumstance is a travesty accelerated by a total breakdown of industrial relations. The unions are calling on Bowen and Bowen to reinstate the employees, stating that it is imperative to, (Quote) “restore public confidence in the working environment and culture cultivated by the company as it relates to, above all security of tenure for its employees.” (Unquote) And then the unions really target the company where it hurts, stating that, (Quote) “in order to propel focus in the reinstatement direction, the A.P.S.S.M., the BCWU and the N.T.U.C.B. call on all their membership and the wider public to join us in demonstrating our discontent with the firings by boycotting purchase of ALL Bowen products on Friday, March twenty-first, 2014.” (Unquote)  The three unions claim that they stand ready to amplify their actions if the need arises. The releases came in late today, and we’re pretty sure it won’t be the last we’ll hear of this.

Employees are quick to run to the media when they are fired. In a lot of these cases the employees do not take the time to learn what their rights and the rights of their employer are. I am both an employee and also an employer and I have made sure to learn the Labour Act…Chapter 297. Bowen has the right to change working conditions as long as they give due notice to employees about the changes. If you do not like the new terms, then you resign BUT not showing up to work now gives Bowen the grounds to terminate any employee without even paying notice…Chapter 297 Sec 46(2)(e)…It is as simple as that!!! Knowledge is Power!!!

Sure! lets just don’t worry about the ALL the hundreds of other employees depending on that income to get paid!!! As a single parent I am certainly depending on it. I am happy with our company and if i wasn’t would simply look for a job elsewhere. I am not contracted to them! No one here is I am sure. Besides, there are two sides to every story.. investigate well please..

  7. OH WELL!! says:

Rod you are an idiot and extremely ignorant, please get a life. Unions had nothing to do with the financial issues for the states you mentioned.. Unions were organized to protect employees and is well needed to insure that good employees are paid a fair wage and benefits. Just because some bad apples take advantage of the union rules for their own selfishness does not make unions a bad thing. Many people have advance and been protected due to unions. You really need to get some psychiatric help, the more I read your comments the more you prove how ignorant you are. Continue making and a** of yourself idiot.

Some people can only speak because they are not working there and they do not know what these young men go through to make a living. Working there is working for a white master whose word is final. These young men really work hard and they treat them like children. All of you who are commenting probably has you life made from the day you were born so you should’t be talking. go and work 1 week at bowen and see how you like it. i only here stories from friends and that Sh^t gets me tires. Everyone has the right to unionize but when you get a job at bowen they make you sign a contract that states that you can’t form a union. They don’t even have insurance and when they get robbed in the streets, the master has someone call and ask about the truck and the money and they don’t ask if the workers are okay. what kind of bull is that?
