De’Zhaun Humes shot 5 times in Belize City

De’Zhaun Humes

It did not make it on today’s police blotter, but on Friday night, another Belize City youth was injured in a shooting in the Jane Usher Boulevard area. Nineteen year old De’Zhaun Humes is tonight admitted at the surgical ward of the K.H.M.H. after he was hit five times to the body by an unknown gunman as he was heading to his girlfriends house on Jane Usher Boulevard. The news of the shooting is even more traumatic for the family because three and a half years ago, Humes’ sibling, eight year old E’yannie Nunez was killed by gun violence. Nunez was murdered as she slept at her house on Zericote Street and gunmen opened fire indiscriminately and took her life. The murder of the All Saints school girl shocked not only the country and the family and now, the shooting of Humes has Francine Pitts taken aback. Pitts told News Five this afternoon that the shooting is heart-wrenching because Friday night made exactly seven months since Humes’ father died.

Francine Pitts, Mother of Shooting Victim

“He went to buy food that night and on arriving back home that’s when he got shot about five times to his body. What I can explain is that drive this whole situation is that my son has no enemy, he is not a trouble person. He is dah wah quiet outgoing person. He mi live dah Lord’s Bank with ih pa; and the same Friday night my son get shot make exactly seven months since ih pa died. And he was evicted out of his father’s home by police. My son stayed at me, sometimes he stayed at his sister and that night ih just gone dah ih girl and I always feared for that neighborhood weh my son go visit ih girlfriend.”

“Why would anyone want to see him dead?”

Francine Pitts

“I, myself, am trying to figure that out. I think that it is something deep personally.”

“What’s going through your head to know that you could have possibly lost yet a second child?”

Francine Pitts

“Well for me, I’m telling you, I always give god the glory because I beg god, I said lord never you take another child from me for gunshot and every day I get up, I plead the blood of Jesus over my children and I say god no weapon against my child shall prosper. And I know that the devil attack me ina that situation there, but I noh fear nothing and my son have that same belief. He say mommy, I fear no man, I fear god.”
