Plane crash lands in Punta Gorda

A private aircraft with U.S. registration crash landed this afternoon at the Punta Gorda airstrip. The pilot was fifty-two year old Michael Bogacz and his partner, Jennifer Sobre…both American nationals. Sobre was injured to the head and transported to the Punta Gorda Hospital in a critical, but stable condition, but fortunately for Bogacz, he was unscathed. It is believed that the plane experienced mechanical problems forcing it to crash land; as a result, the plane was damaged to the front, both wings and tail end.  Deputy Officer Commanding the Punta Gorda Police, Inspector Ernel Dominguez spoke on the accident.

Via Phone: Insp. Ernel Dominguez, Deputy O.C., Punta Gorda Police

“Approximately two-forty-five p.m., PG police was called to an area of the Ministry of Works Compound in Toledo in the vicinity of the Head of Ministry of Works, Toledo, Mister Eric Moore, where it was observed that a white in color single-engine aircraft, two-seater, was seen lying on the ground with damages to its front, both wings and tail end. Investigation reveals that sometime before three p.m., the plane suffered mechanical failure while in the area of the municipal airstrip, Punta Gorda Town where it crash landed as a result. As a result of the impact, the passenger at the time, who was a female American national, accompanying the male pilot of the plane, received injuries to the head. The pilot escaped unhurt. So far the matter is under investigation.”

“Officer, I understand that this is a private plane.”

Via Phone: Insp. Ernel Dominguez

“Yes, from what we could have learnt, we learned it would appear to be a private plane and not a commercial.”

“How would you rate the severity of the injuries to the female?”

Via Phone: Insp. Ernel Dominguez

“…Received head injuries; it would be serious but in a stable condition.”

“In cases like this, what steps does the investigation take? Do you guys investigate along with the airport authority? How does that work?”

Via Phone: Insp. Ernel Dominguez

“What happens is that normally the police will go on the scene, make the necessary assessment. If in case there is a loss of life, the police ensure that the bodies are secured and taken to the morgue. Furthermore the investigation will turn from there where the civil aviation authority will take it over from the police. The safety and the scene will be secured by the police.”
