P.U.P. women launch their Women’s Agenda

As we told you earlier in our newscast, the P.U.P. women will not be at the twenty-thousand strong rally set for Thursday. The party has stated that it does not support what it calls a largely meaningless event when there are so many real women’s issues left untended every day. Today many P.U.P. women from all over the country gathered at party headquarters for the launch of the Women’s Agenda. The P.U.P. has presented a manifesto for women during every election cycle since 1998, so this will be their fifth. According to Deputy Leader Dolores Balderamos-Garcia, the manifesto represents a commitment to women and gender issues, a roadmap going forward.

Dolores Balderamos-Garcia, Deputy Leader, P.U.P.

“We can do better in terms of how we present and give the services of social security to the people. We can definitely go back to the non-contributory pension to help win. We can go to look at refining areas of the health sector that will benefit our women better. The specific commitments can be read, for example and going to legal, we know that better can be done to ensure fairness for women and girls in the work place. So those are areas that we can look at. I don’t want to go into too much detail because everything is set out in the specific commitments, but you can count on us fulfilling that women’s manifesto when the People’s United Party forms the government.”

“How important is the involvement of women? I notice a lot of women here today and there are a lot of women in the party and more interest. How important is that?”

Dolores Balderamos-Garcia

“Very important. The People’s United Party has been built on the backs of women. From the days of Madam Liz and Deputy Caroling made sure that she gave us a good history of why Madam Liz is revered in our party and also in the Belizean community in terms of the history. The involvement of women is essential in politics, but not only that; in national life and in national development. And I think that we had an excellent turn out of women from across the country—a lady from PG just hailed me a while ago—beucase we know that we can never leave women out of the national political agenda. And the People’s United Party has always placed women front and center of the agenda. This is why we say that the difference between the approach to women of the two political party…the difference is as clear as night and day.”

The 2014 Women’s Agenda is entitled Charting Greater Pathways for Belizean Women as Nation Builders. It focuses on six areas: Education and Skills Training; Health and Wellness; Socio-Cultural/Political; Economic Empowerment; Land, Housing and Property Rights and Legal.
