Fatal traffic accident on the Philip Goldson Highway

The sixth traffic fatality since the beginning of March, but the fourth fatality for Rural Belize in less than two days was recorded this morning following yet another traffic mishap on the Philip Goldson Highway. Police say that over the course on Monday night, they were called out to an area between miles six and seven on the Phillip Goldson Highway; two vehicles travelling in opposite direction to each other crashed head on. All three persons inside both vehicles were rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, but by this morning, Corozal resident, Lennox Garbutt succumbed to his injuries.

ASP Christopher Noble, Rural Executive Officer, Police Department

“Police responded to a call of a traffic accident in the area between miles six and seven on the Phillip Goldson Highway. We met two vehicles out there and person out there that had been injured. They were transported to Karl Heusner and early part of the morning, one of the occupants of one of the vehicles passed. We are presently dealing with an autopsy for that person. Pretty young is our information so far, but we have established that vehicles were traveling in opposite direction; that is, one was traveling to the City and the other to the Ladyville area.”

“Apart from the person that died, how many others were injured…can you say? And what so far from the investigation is believed to have led to the accident?”

ASP Christopher Noble

“From the investigation, we have very little to go on at this stage. The autopsy will reveal some information. The other persons which I believe were in the area of two will furnish us with some information and hopefully we can put closure to it for all parties involved.”
