Cop is stabbed 18 times in Orange Walk

First Responder

A San Ignacio police officer was stabbed as many as eighteen times over the weekend. The stabbing took place in Orange Walk Town where the cop had reportedly gone to visit his mother-in-law. PC Abimael Romero was found in a pool of blood by a resident of the area and it is believed he was intoxicated when a group of men pounced on him. Even as he hemorrhaged, his attackers continued to pursue him. Tonight, he remains in critical condition. News Five’s Isani Cayetano spoke to a responder who alerted the police.

Twenty-five-year-old police constable Abimael Romero remains in critical but stable condition tonight, after being stabbed as many as eighteen times in the wee early hours of Sunday.  The off-duty officer was reportedly assailed by a group of men who relentlessly pursued him along a lonely backstreet in Orange Walk Town.  Romero, who was bleeding profusely, was discovered near a vacant lot by a resident of Asuncion Street.

“About one-thirty [in] the morning I came out and we saw a man lying down in front of this yard, you know, and I saw him bleeding a lot.  So, the first thing that came to my mind was to dial for the police, you know.  I called nine-one-one and asked them to come quickly because the man is bleeding to death.”

While Orange Walk police declined an interview, we understand that Romero, a resident of Bishop Martin Street in Santa Elena Town, had been drinking heavily on Saturday evening.  His trip, according to colleagues in the department, was to visit with his mother-in-law, as it is presumed that his girlfriend is a resident of Orange Walk.

“I was trying to help him also.  When he got up a little we saw his shirt, you know, with some holes in it at the back.  In his hand had holes also and on his face, you know.  I guess where, I don’t know how much times he got, how much holes he had in his back but we didn’t count but according to what we’ve heard now it’s about fifteen to eighteen [times], you know.  He is very strong because he tried to get up, you know, and lean up but I guess he lost a lot of blood and he collapsed again, you know.”

Romero attempted to support himself by propping up against this wooden fence but the debilitating injuries wouldn’t allow him.

“When the police they came, they told us that he is one of [them], a police officer also, you know.  So they said they would take him to the hospital and we told them how we saw him.  We saw him lying down in the bush, you know.  But the thing is, we saw a vehicle also at the end of the road, you know, and well I guess, I would say that probably it was the person that was lying down, that was his attacker in the car also, you know.  Like I said, we were out here, me, my daughter and my son-in-law, we were out here.  They didn’t come close, you know, but I guess probably he was lucky that we were out here.”

His stupor, it is believed, was also the result of being intoxicated.

Isani Cayetano

“Could you confirm, based on what you observed, was he drunk or was he aware of what was happening?”

Voice of: First Responder

“Well I will say that yes he was under the influence of liquor, you know, but when we asked him what happened to him, he told us that someone was trying to attack him, you know.  It looks like he was in and out, in and out of consciousness, you know, because probably he lost a lot of blood; that yes, he lost a lot of blood.  So I would say that probably in the beginning he knew what was happening, you know, but after that, well I think he lost consciousness, you know.  He fell down two times when we found him.”

In a report to police, Romero says that he was relieved of a blue and grey knapsack containing his passport, several articles of clothing, as well as a cellular phone.  An investigation into the near-fatal incident continues. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.

  1. Lord LOL says:

I do not know why Belizeans need to walk in public in a very intoxicated manner. It is very unsafe. This is one of the things that may happen to a very drunk man, for a drunk woman, it may be rape that will happen to her.

  2. Jesus says:

There should be a law to immediately lock anybody that is on the streets drunk. Those that make these kinds of killings should have no mercy with them.
