5 fatalities: hit & run victim, 13 year old Earl Jones Jr., succumbs

Earl Flores Jr.

A family is grieving tonight the death of thirteen year old Earl Ishmael Flores Junior. The minor was hospitalized since last week in a coma after he was injured in a hit and run near his home in the Buttercup community near Burrell Boom. The young boy was found bleeding and unconscious on the side of the road. Flores was rushed to the K.H.M.H. and just after twelve this morning; he succumbed to injuries sustained in the hit and run. The family told the media today that they are frustrated because police investigations have been too slow.

“Right now I di go through a lot because that dah my baby. I only got one gial and one bwai—Aliyah Flores and Earl Flores. And my pickney dehn, anything dehn ask me I give it to them. If I have to left with the last, I give it to them…not knowing that this would happen.”

“When he arrived at the hospital, I was there. I took him in. they gave him an induced coma on him; he never ever regained his consciousness. And the thing I can’t understand is that the hospital did two CAT-scan—nothing showed on that child brain that it was swollen—it only had a little swell. After that, Thursday, I called my bredda dehn and they said ih di do okay. Friday he was going fine and Saturday, when they find out dehn do another CAT-scan, it show that the lee bwai brain swell and black.”

“They did do an emergency surgery on him the night before and when they came out of the surgery, they said that he had hours to live and we held on to hope and he made it through the day, the night and his pressure was giving him problem—it was going up and down—and before we left the evening, we said our prayers like normally. My aunt called around twelve and told us that he passed away. Right now, the investigation is not going where we want it to go, but the police are trying to hold our confidence in them to see if they can get to the bottom of the situation. Honestly, we are still not happy with what they are saying. They are saying that they are looking at the scene, looking at the incident and everything and trying to figure out if he was either knocked down or if he fell off his bicycle. The fact that I saw my cousin put off in that hospital for an entire week; that is not a fall down of a bicycle. He fought for his life. Nobody who fell off a bicycle would disfigure their entire face, tooth broken off; the entire brain fallen. Don’t tell me that is a fall off a bicycle. So Mister Noble, you know me and you know my family and I am not coming off this case until I feel satisfied with the fact that someone hit my cousin.”

“It was an incident in the Buttercup area of Burrell Boom. We did find out that the child passed earlier this morning, but occurred last week. The family, I spoke with them today, I do believe that the information we have been given is something actionable and we will be looking into it to further deal with it. That autopsy is also scheduled for later today.”

This is such a tragedy and I extend my deepest sympathy to the family. One of the things that must be looked at is the accuracy of the CT scan. I worked briefly in the medical field while I was in Belize and one of the things that was consistent with the tests coming from the lab is that the determinations were most often inaccurate. This was so bad that I had to forward all radiology readings and tests to a lab in the states in order to get an accurate reading. 98% of the time, what was written out on paper from Belize did not coincide with what the foreign radiologists found. I will not call names but one of the radiologists confessed to us that the working conditions are poor and that the equipment sometimes does not perform up to standards. The lesson here, do not take for granted that when any type of radiology report is handed to you that it is accurate. Wake up people! Look at the qualifications of your minister of health as compared to those of counterparts in the region. This is the same in most of the ministries led by clueless politicians. I feel so sad for my Belizean people. With political favoritism so rampant even in our medical field many more citizens will continue to die unnecessarily.
