Dog is mutilated by children in Belize City

Calbert Flowers

There is a very disturbing case to report tonight, and it was no accident. In fact, its senseless nature practically defies comprehension. News Five has confirmed reports that on Saturday, a dog was beaten badly and hung from a tree by its neck, before its throat was slashed. It happened on Neal Penn Road Extension, and while the abuse and killing of the dog is bad enough, there are reliable reports that it was done by a bunch of children in the neighborhood, just for fun. The Police are investigating the matter, but believe it or not, the residents in the area are refusing to provide any information to the Police.

ASP Calbert Flowers, Deputy O.C., Precinct Two, Belize City Police

“On Saturday, February fifteenth, 2014 sometime around three-fifteen p.m., a volunteer from the Belize Humane Society visited the Raccoon Street Police Station requesting police assistance into a matter where it was a case of cruelty to animal. Based on the report, police visited Neal Penn Road Extension where they visited an abandoned lot which was overgrown with bushes where police identified a dog hanging from a tree with injuries.”

Mike Rudon

“I’m sure that’s not one of the regular calls that police would get. How would an investigation like that proceed?”

ASP Calbert Flowers

“Well it is not one of the regular calls and like all other reports; the police have launched an investigation. However, we didn’t come up with anything so far. No one out there is cooperating with us. We cannot ascertain if the dog had an owner and who is responsible or if anybody is responsible for the action.”

Mike Rudon

“Now we have heard a rumor that it was actually done by kids, probably between the age of ten and thirteen. Have the police also heard that report?”

ASP Calbert Flowers

“The person who reported the matter to the police from the humane society gave us some information, however, we have been trying to follow up on these information, but no one is willing to come forward to give us more information so that we can build a case on it.”

Mike Rudon

“For a situation like that, if you would find who is responsible, would there be a charge that could be brought against them?”

ASP Calbert Flowers

“Certainly there is a charge for such matter.”

News Five received photos taken on the scene, but they were way too graphic for TV. As we’ve told you, it was reportedly done by a group of youths from the neighborhood.

why are people surprised by, what the media called “senseless”? Look at where these kids come from. Poor kids are senseless because they are growing up in a senseless place, with senseless adults. These kids need to be taken away from their useless parents, and since they are kids, still have a chance.

Then go back and euthanized these parents so they don’t breed anymore. Ahh, sounds harsh, but yet, here we are, with a bunch of useless scum who prefer to commit crime against each other, instead of joining their forces and help each other.

why proceed on a situation like this. Dogs should be tied of fence by owners. there are some dogs who bite people and nothing comes out of those stories.
there are a lot of rape murders and child molestors cases out there who should be getting the atention of the police and crime stoppers not some silly dog death story.

  3. bernard garbutt says:

people who abuses dogs and other animals are not good people and could grow up to be murderers

  4. Elgin Martinez says:

This is what happen when the laws are not enforced.Furthermore why is it surprising that the people in that area are not providing any information to the authorities. No one is going to risk their live by giving the Police information to be killed for being a witness to this heinous act.

  5. OriginalWoman says:

Susanah this is not “some silly dog death story”. You sound as cold and insensitive as the children who killed the dog for fun. This is a story about animal cruelty. The children should be held responsible, and be made to do some community work, punished, and definitely counseled. This is a sad story and reading your response makes it even sadder. You sound like a mindless, insensitive adult.

susanah it doesn’t take a genius to realize why this is troubling. If a child who torture, hangs up a dog and slit its throat does this when he is 10 years old imagine when he gets older. FBI in the US monitor cases of animal abuse very seriously as these are all indications of sociopath. These children are often victims of abuse themselves in their homes. The violence they watch they follow in example.

    Wouldn’t real education help????

  8. Tanya says:

Well said Original Women, the people around that area should provide some information about this situation in order for the youths who committed the heinous act to receive some sort of counselling, may that community be reminded that helping the children could result in a change to these youths so that they may turn out to be a better man or women in this country.

Susanah I hope you don’t have children you are the reason why most of my fellow Belizeans treat animals especially dogs so cruel. Dearest Susanah you can tell a lot about someone’s character they way they treat animals I feel sorry for you. As for those children I hope one of their parent do the right thing and tell the authorities what they need to know, studies have shown that children that abuse, mutilate and kill defenseless animals end up being serial killers because killing animals gets boring so they turn to killing humans. Good job Belize Humane Society I will try to find your web site and donate when I can.

Research has consistently reported that childhood cruelty to animals is the first warning sign of later delinquency, violence, and criminal behavior. In fact, nearly all violent crime perpetrators have a history of animal cruelty in their profiles.

Every act of violence committed against an animal is not a sign that a person is going to turn out to be a murderer. For e.g. sometimes small children rough play with a pet and end up hurting the animal as kids lack the cognitive maturity to know otherwise, so it is up to parents and guardians to teach about properly caring. However, violently lashing out at a pet after getting in trouble with a parent, or taking pleasure in watching an animal in pain are all “red flags” that signal the need for professional intervention.
