Taiwan donates ten containers of clothes to Belize

Story PictureThis afternoon, the government and people of Taiwan made another significant contribution to Belize. With the help of a Taiwanese company based in Japan, at least two forty-foot containers have arrived in Belize every month since October full of clothing, shoes, and accessories for men, women, and children. According to Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize, Joseph Shih, while his government continues to work with Belmopan on major projects, this particular donation highlights Taiwan’s direct ties with the Belizean people.

Ambassador Joseph Shih, Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize
?The government is very happy to provide it to the underprivileged here and hope that it can serve one of the humanitarian aid to so some people. I think basically we try to donate this ten containers, we have forty-foot containers, so altogether its about a hundred and twenty-two thousand pieces of clothes that cover ranges of human clothes and we hope that we can put it to good use.?

?When we hand it over to the Belize Government, and thanks for the government assistance I think with the government will decide. And maybe NGOs and other organisations, once they decide what?because there so many pieces of them, so actually we can put them to very good use?

?Any other message to the Belizean public about this donation??

Ambassador Joseph Shih
?I think, yes I await further development to the economy and Taiwan is always stand on your side and this is donation is a manifestation of that.?

Said Musa, Prime Minister
?This is not a gift that we will just simply distribute in an indiscriminate manner. We will work it through the various non-governmental organisations such as the Red Cross, the Guides, the Scouts, the Mercy Kitchen, the Y.M.C.A., the Y.W.C.A. … all these various organisation that work with people, helping people in need, helping people, deserving people. It?s not an easy task and I don?t think any government should undertake to distribute this large quantity of materials, otherwise you?ll give rise to perhaps political mischief. And so I appreciate that you?ve made it a pre-condition that the donation be distributed in a humanitarian manner and of course I would imagine that NEMO would want to retain some in the event of a future disaster.?

The boxes of clothing, shoes, schoolbags, and handbags will be stored at the NEMO buildings in Ladyville and Belmopan until they can be properly distributed.
