4% – the salary adjustments for teachers

Dean Barrow

Throughout the month of January, the unions took to the streets calling for an end to corruption and salary adjustments. Two weeks ago, Prime Minister Barrow announced that based on projections, teachers and public officers were looking at a salary adjustment of not less than three percent when they receive it in July. Well, Barrow met with the union’s negotiating team on Thursday to continue discussion and to crunch numbers, and today the PM was able to commit to even more. Based on current figures, Barrow says that teachers and public officers will now be looking at not less than a four percent salary adjustment.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Now, in addition to that two percent annual increment, which has always from the time we restored it I repeat exceeded the annual rate of inflation, the teachers and public officers will get a raise of pay on top of the two percent increment. That on the basis of the figures that I gave to them on Thursday when we had the meeting would suggest would not be less than four percent. I had said three in the New Year’s Day message, then when we looked again it appeared to be three point five percent and that is what we handed to the unions. And they said by their own calculation since one percentage point salary increase, according to the financial secretary, was five point seven million and the union said, oh no, it is not anything as high as that. It looks like that three point five percent is looking more like four percent. So four percent on top of two percent; you are looking at a six percent increase for the teachers and the public officers countrywide.”
