Principal Public Health Inspector says PG Hospital followed proper procedures

On Tuesday, we reported on a garbage situation at the Punta Gorda Hospital involving the accumulation of medical waste inside the storage facility.  The incinerator which is used to consume the refuse has reportedly been out of service for several months, forcing the hospital administration to transport trash from PG to the Southern Regional Hospital.  That furnace, we are told, cannot handle the volume of waste from both sites.  The incinerator recently broke down, leaving the PG Hospital without an alternative to the dispose of its garbage.  In spite of the difficulties, Principal Public Health Inspector, John Bodden, says that the hospital has followed proper procedures in bagging and securing the waste.

John Bodden, Principal Public Health Inspector

“The current situation is that the service of the incinerator has been out for a little while and normally what we would do we would dispose the waste at the dumpsite.  Unfortunately, because of the rain condition that has actually prohibited us from using that site and we were using the Dangriga hospital or the Southern Regional Hospital’s facility; however, that as well went out of commission.  As a result, we were unable to do our normal procedures in terms of incineration.  So, as a result of that we have a stockpile of garbage in our storage room.”

“What is to be done now to get rid of this garbage in light of the fact that both facilities are currently out of service?”

John Bodden

“Well what we have done and in actuality, as we speak, the garbage should be on its way to Belize City for incineration by the Belize Waste Control.”

“Is there any word from the relevant authorities with regards to repairs to bring up to par the facility both in Punta Gorda Town and at Southern Regional Hospital?”

John Bodden

“The Southern Regional facility is back and running.  Unfortunately, because of the age of the incinerator it is unable to handle the volume being generated by both institutions so it’s no longer and option for the Punta Gorda Hospital.  However, what we will be doing is actually to source a new incinerator for the Punta Gorda Hospital.  Currently we’re collecting estimates and then we’ll purchase, because that system is no longer good so we’ll have to replace it.”

There is no word as to when the incinerator in Punta Gorda will be replaced.

Hell John!!!!!! This isn’t a “little while” that the incinerator hasn’t been operational. Toxic Waste has been sitting around for MONTHS and MONTHS on end! This points to negligence and lack of planning at the Ministry of Health. Whats wrong with you all man?!……Everyday i get up and Thank God for the hard-working Belizean Media and i PRAY i don’t get sick and have to go to ANY GOB Health Facility!!!!!!……………..I encourage other Belizeans to do the same.

That health inspector needs to take that garbage home and stick it in his back yard. Maybe so he will become more conscientious and carry out his duties.
