Minister of Education extends an olive branch to the union

Patrick Faber

At the height of the recent demonstrations, there were heated exchanges between the Belize National Teachers Union and the government. The prime minister called B.N.T.U. President, Luke Palacio, a windup doll, while the Minister of Education, Patrick Faber, was referred to as a little boy. But despite the adversarial relationship, none of the insults are being taken personally.  This morning during a breakfast meeting with the media, Minister Faber extended what can be considered an olive branch by pledging his commitment to continue working with to the union.  Faber says the goal of his ministry is to improve Belize’s education sector.

Patrick Faber, Minister of Education

“The ministry remains committed to working with the B.N.T.U., I know that that is something that you have as great concern.  You know, a lot has been said by union officials on the rostrums and the podiums of these rallies.  Let me assure you that as the minister and head of the ship of the Ministry of Education that I don’t take any of it personal.  That, in fact, I think Winston Churchill once advised that when there are these kinds of events, of course he was talking about war, I’m not talking about war, that you don’t get distracted by all of this noise and trying to defend although some will accuse me of that.  But for now, we are on track and we are hoping that sharing these initiatives with you this morning will help us to move forward because we waste time defending and defending and we are distracted from where we want to go.  This ministry is focused, this ministry has a plan, this ministry will follow that plan and we hope that we can count on you, very important partners, very important stakeholders in our effort to improve education.”
