A literacy program for residents of St. Martin De Porres

Brent Hamilton

Residents of the St. Martin de Porres area are benefiting from computer literacy thanks to a program spearheaded by the Belize Police Department with assistance from the Samuel Haynes Institute for Excellence.  The program was launched this afternoon and a group of women were the first to enroll in classes being provided by a community-based N.G.O.  The Mahogany Street Police Precinct has been instrumental in organizing the program and is the brainchild of Sergeant Brent Hamilton.  The brass of the police department was on hand to celebrate the launch of the program.

“The program get started having our cadets on Tuesday, Monday Wednesday; we usually have cadets. And myself, Mister Jenkins…some of the parents come in and say Sarge, I want to help mi cadet with the homework. I got the computer home, but I noh know how to start it. I noh wah spoil it when I invest so much money and so forth. I told Mister Jenkins, the community that I work with, it doesn’t matter where they come from—this is not a red blue yellow green—this is about people. That’s where my passion is. We need to do something for our community when it comes to technology. I taught myself, but I want a better way forward for someone to teach these mothers. And, we look up in the ceiling in my officer right here and said where will the computers come from, where the expert will come from and who will finance it. And so I knocked on my door behind me and I looked and saw Mister Elrington walking in the compound and I said maybe we will have to ask him. And then I was driving home passing the boulevard and I saw a nice green and white sign that says CCRD and I said ahhh. I remember one time he came to my officer and the computer whiz came in that he can design all kinds of things. So I said alright, the instructors can come right from here.”
