…But deplorable condition of sugar roads still an issue

The biggest setback for the industry, according to Ortega, is still the deplorable condition of the sugar roads in a number of areas. So farmers are taking matters into their own hands and are filling huge craters to make roads accessible to the cane fields. Ortega is also asking the government to restart the works on the sugar roads immediately because weather conditions later in the week will not be favorable for road works.

Alfredo Ortega, Vice-Chairman, Committee of Management, B.S.C.F.A.

“A little bit with the mill, but you know small stoppages because I believe they are doing some adjustments in some areas. But nothing so big and well that demonstrates that yes there is a better function in the mill and we hope that as time goes by, they can adjust much well in the mill and they can increase deliveries per day.”

“Would you say that you guys are still making an appeal on the sugar roads?”

Alfredo Ortega

“Of course, we maintain that appeal to the government because it is very important for those sugar roads to be fixed because I heard this morning that the weather bureau is predicting that we will be having rains again. Those roads in the conditions they are with a little bit of rain, it becomes impassable again and the setbacks with the farmers the opportunity to bring in their cane to the mill. Very little we had seen because the roads that they have left from last week they have not come again to touch again anything of those roads. Because of the weather well much of the water has dried. Well the farmers are really trying to pass on them, putting some rocks on them so they can have a pass and other farmers have been going through a longer route where they can come out with the trucks and bring in the cane to the mill.”
