B.D.F. soldier charged for the manslaughter of Staff Sergeant Abimael Carrillo

On December twelfth, 2013, B.D.F. Soldier Abimael Carrillo, who had been serving the Belize Defence Force for almost two decades, was killed in a traffic mishap. Today, one of his own surviving colleagues, forty-three year old Juan Tuyub was arraigned for his death.   Tuyub was charged with Manslaughter by Negligence, Causing Death by Careless Conduct and Driving Without Due Care and Attention. No plea was taken and he was offered bail in the sum of five thousand dollars and is due back in court on March seventeenth, 2014.  The accident occurred by a culvert at the intersection of the B.D.F. Price Barracks and the Phillip Goldson Highway. The Staff Sergeant was one of two passengers travelling in a Toyota pick-up driven Tuyub.   Tuyub, and another B.D.F. Soldier, Severio Cowo along with Carrillo were returning to the B.D.F. base at around one thirty in the morning  when they turn off the Northern Highway, allegedly because the driver lost control of the vehicle. Reports are that the vehicle flipped into a culvert at the side of the road which was filled with water, trapping everyone inside it.  While Cowo and Tuyub were rescued in time, B.D.F. Sergeant Carrillo was not so fortunate and by the time he was pulled out of the vehicle, he was unconscious. B.D.F. Carrillo was later rushed to the B.D.F. Medical Hospital where he later died about an hour and a half later from his injuries. Carrillo was a staff Sergeant for eighteen years.
