Activist calls for the immediate detention of Reynaldo Verde

Russell Roberts

As we said, COLA is now putting its full support behind Russell Roberts, who is championing this move to have the law removed or revised. Since then, Roberts says that he has met with several attorneys to peruse the gun law and at today’s press conference, he gave an update. One activist even called for the immediate detention of Reynaldo Verde.

“We met with some lawyers discussing aspects in the law that need to be revised. So forward we will be working with some senior attorneys, getting information and we are putting it together. We are also looking towards finding some of the victims that are affected by this law.  I want them to understand, this is pro-bono; nothing will come out of their pockets for this. We will look into their cases and try to see how best we could assist them in their cause.  Mister Bradley and Mister Sylvestre make some points we need to look at. People who have been unlawfully detained and also some that are in jail presently, can’t get a bail…we have to look at those cases as well. Also Mister Sylvester made mention of some cases; persons arrested, detained and not yet charged. Persons charged with cases and trials which are pending. Also we want to find some of the people that plead guilty to have their family from going through this also in jail.”

“What I want to say is that it has been almost one week since the last press conference and since the last outcry of the people saying that we have people who actually take lick and Mister Verde neva take no lick; the consequences were not leveled down on him. Well on behalf of the Belizean people I deh yah di call for the immediate detention and charge against Mister Verde for the crime that he actually committed. One week ago, we have no official reply from any minister; the head of state, the Prime Minister, the Commissioner of Police, the police officers who actually leveled the not guilty charge on Mister Verde are not even taken to the ethics committee. So once again I am here leveling my complaint saying that we call on the immediate detention of Mister Verde and if we have to march to get the immediate attention that this law and this situation demands then we are set to do that.”

The controversial legislation was introduced into law three years ago to deter criminal activity using guns.

Verde is from a PUP family. Didn’t lawyer Bradley and Sylvertser get the memo? See who are your friends Verde-they even make you keep your job-remember that.
