Mother and daughter attacked by four armed men in a scary home invasion

Elizabeth Artiga and her mother, Maria Elisa Artiga, locked up their small grocery shop on the Palmar Boundary Road in Orange Walk Town and headed home on Friday night. It is a daily routine for the mother and daughter, but on that night a nightmare waited for them. Home invasions have become increasingly common, and frequently the victims are subjected to battery and sexual assault, and sometimes are even killed by their attackers. So when four men jumped out of the bush and assaulted Elizabeth and Maria Elisa, they had no idea what was in store for them, and no idea if they would live to see another day. They did, and on Monday a still shaken Elizabeth Artiga told News Five that during the ordeal they were in a state of constant, extreme terror.

Voice of: Elizabeth Artiga, Victim of Home Invasion

“Well we were reaching at my house then my mom opened the gate. When she was open the gate one of the guys just come and pull her and then when I turn back I see three more and then the other one they just pull me from the car and then push me down to the ground and then one of them put their foot to my head. MY ma was fighting with them and one of them had a play toy I mean gun and my ma broke it and afterwards they force we to go into the house and they ker we to the house, they ker we to my ma room and they put we one sheet. Then they ask we for we money and we tell them that all the money is in the purse and they say no they want more and then we tell them that we don’t have anymore. So then they ask we fi the key from the house and then they already had the car and then they left we right there with two guys and then the two other guys came right here at the shop and they open the doors with the keys and they ker all the money. So we stay in the house like two hours. I just like was thinking what they will do if they will rape us, if they will kill us, or something so I can’t explain how I could feel.”

Young Elizabeth was able to identify at least one of the assailants as a schoolmate. Orange Walk Police acted swiftly and have three persons in custody. Ronald Bruhier of Palmar and two minors have been charged with Aggravated Burglary, Wounding and Taking a Conveyance without Authority.
