…But sugar roads impassable

The critical necessity of government’s intervention where sugar roads are concerned cannot be understated at this point. Now that the signing is done, the cane-farmers need to get their product to the mill, but in many branches of the B.S.C.F.A. that is just not possible at this time. Access roads to fields and even main arteries to the factory have deteriorated to the point where many of them are impassable. So how serious are the cane-farmers about getting their sugar roads fixed. Well, Chairman of the Progresso Branch Hernan Villas says that if G.O.B. does not listen to their many cries, complaints and pleas, they have already decided to block the road. If they can’t get in or out, then nobody else is either. It’s a hard-line stance, but to Villas, they have tried everything else and there are no other options.

“Due to the papaya company the sugar roads are really in bad conditions, and I have asked Mr. Vega that please can he assist us on that. Because I have talked to some cane farmers that we have to block the two entrance from the sugar road. So if farmers can’t take out their production, well even the papaya cannot take out their own production. So he tell me that he is going to work on it. I tell him about the main road and they tell me that they can’t touch it because it is under contract. After that I went to the PM for the meeting and after the meeting I spoke to him again, Mr. Vega and I spoke to him about the roads right. He tell me he is going to work it through NEMO because that is an emergency, so I say alright. The thing is that they work it because we really want to start crop and now that we are two day in this meeting, we have show that the cane farmers have agreed on the interim agreement and we have seen that we can start crop but since the road is in bad conditions now I have talked to some cane farmers, I have told them that if we have to block the road, we have to do it because only so maybe the government is going to see the situation that we are crossing, that we can’t come out with our production, we can’t come out, not only the cane farmers right now, even the students because every day the bus are stucking in the road. So that why I write today, the cane farmers from Progresso only six of them come, with me da six, so I decide not to bring bus today, because of the situation of the road. Both roads from Corozal to the ferry and to San Esteven are in bad condition.”

According to the B.S.C.F.A., they will be meeting with Minister of Works Rene Montero and engineers from the Ministry to present a priority plan for sugar roads. Up for discussion at that meeting will also be the contractors who will get those juicy contracts. The B.S.C.F.A. says that there are obviously two favored contractors in the north, but for the purposes of getting the crop underway as soon as possible, politically motivated contract giveaways will be less efficient and less effective.

  1. OH WELL! says:

Cane farmers as you well know all they will do is throw some white dust on the road, grade flat and it will last of 2 weeks. This what they have been doing for years now, I wonder what happened to all the millions and the European Union gave them to give a PAVED road. The sign says it was to start in 2012 and finish in November of 2013. Here we are January of 2014 and not only is the road not PAVED it is impassable. This Government are the best magiicians they know how to make monies turn paved roads into impassable roads Bravo Belize Government BRAVO.
