Cayo paddlers head to Texas for annual canoe competition

Story PictureBut while things are tough on the hardwood at home, out in Texas Belizeans are expected to fare much better in international canoeing competition. Six paddlers including Efrain Cruz, Armin Lopez, Daniel Cruz, Amado Cruz, Jerry Rhaburn and John Bugge left the country earlier this week to prepare for the Texas Water Safari. According to organisers, the race is a non-stop two hundred and sixty mile long journey between San Marcos and the town of Seadrift. Belize claimed the title in 2005 beating out competitors by more than an hour and a half. Elvin Penner, President of the Belize Canoe Association, says Team Belize will participate in the Texas River Marathon this Saturday which will determine starting positions for the River Safari. Sponsors for the team include Grupo Taca, Marco Industries of Oklahoma, Belize Tourism Board, Koop Sheet Metal and the Belize Canoe Association.
