Residents of inundated rural Belize to receive much needed relief from G.O.B.

Tonight there is good news for farmers in the Belize District, affected by incessant rains resulting in widespread flooding. That flooding has caused damage of agriculture products, as well as pasture loss, decreased livestock production and increased pests and disease. In a release issued earlier, the Department of Agriculture committed to provide assistance in the form of animal feed and agricultural inputs to severely affected farmers. It’s a little late in coming, but that assistance will no doubt be welcome. The assistance program will commence on Saturday, where the department will be providing cattle-feed to livestock producers in the Crooked Tree and Blackburn areas. On Wednesday, assistance will be provided to communities in the Belize River Valley and on Friday, January tenth, to communities along the old Northern Highway. All farmers and agricultural producers affected by rain and flooding in the Belize District are urged to contact the Department of Agriculture at 203-2842 for consideration.
