P.U.P. looking at closely at details of rejected signatures

As we announced on New Year’s Eve, the petition to recall disgraced former Minister of State Elvin Penner has been rejected. That disappointing news is still being analyzed by the P.U.P., which handed in two thousand and two signatures on November twenty-eighth. According to the Elections and Boundaries Office, some of the signatures were duplicated, while others were for persons who are not registered to vote in Cayo Northeast, and some who are not registered to vote at all. The threshold was thirty percent, and after rejected signatures were discarded, those approved only amounted to twenty-eight point five percent. Still, the devil is in the details, and while P.U.P. Deputy Leader Julius Espat told News Five the decision is not surprising, he confirmed that the Party will be looking closely at the details of that rejection.

“In my opinion it is what we expected from government. It is just that it is difficult for one to look at it that way. But the reality is that government is doing what it has always been doing. OCEANA is an example of how they did this. And this is now another example. We are sure, because we have various layers within the party that vetted the signatures, and we are sure of what we presented. Of course there might have been some that would not meet the Elections and Boundaries standards if it would be an objective one. And what they accepted was just too close, twenty-eight point five. I mean if they would have been a little bit better, maybe they should have left it at twenty point five. But it shows you what’s happening. I and the party did not expect anything else. I believe the Belizean people are not expecting anything else, but we need to take it to another level now. Government cannot just throw it out like that and expect us to believe them. The problem we have is that there is no single government institution right now that the people of Belize believes in. The Lands Department; you’ve seen that at the close of year. You go through each department and you see that…the Immigration Department. People are not trusting in the organizations that are running our country. We are not believing that they are there to defend us as Belizean citizens. And until that happens then the people of Belize will start believing and having fate in the system of government. And that is the problem we have. Look at the repeat signatures; that alone is like—it says here—seventy-nine petitions signed twice; a hundred and fifty-eight duplicated entries. And you can…so we need to have proof and we need to see where those numbers are and we would check it with our list and then we go back to them. I cannot tell you what the People’s United Party will do at this point. The party leader has called a national executive meeting to discuss it at a national level. And once that decision is mien, then we will move forward as to what the party will do. I definitely know that we will not take it lightly.”

The P.U.P. recall petition now joins the Oceana referendum petition, both rejected out of hand by the Elections and Boundaries Office.

Agreed. But the party should have taken steps to bring in Internationally accredited election monitors (eg. the Carter Centre) to verify the integrity of the signatures prior to handing them in. This was entirely predictable. The institutions of our country have truly been gutted. The presence of this UDP gov’t has been a movie best dubbed: Dismantling a Constitution 101, Executive Producer/Director Dean Barrow.
Belize cannot count on civil society to protect the constitution. They are too weak or have too much to lose or are saturated by UDP lackeys. If the PUP had pulled a stunt like this, the unions would be in the streets. The audacity of hypocrisy really resonates loudly. As for the smell, lets not even go there.

If the PUP cannot get 2000 registered voters to show up at the Elections and Boundaries Office to show blood sweat and tears, does that mean the PUP is really relevant as a political party?

Another sinister possibility is that UDP-PUP are the same coin. Throw the game, just make it look good.

Meantime, tally-ho. Keep up the thieving, it’s the Belizean way.

That is, until the merger with Mexico and Guatemala. The 150 year old treaties say Mexico gets the north, Guatemala gets the south, Cayo is up for grabs.

Until the PUP is willing to go on record that criminals in government will be fully prosecuted and penalized much more severely than some weed smoking poor person busted for a stick. AND back it up with action, as you said:

“People are not trusting in the organizations that are running our country. We are not believing that they are there to defend us as Belizean citizens.”

And this means PUP members are NOT entitled to get-out-of-jail-cards. So who in the PUP has clean hands??? The Belizean diet is pretty limited: 5y rotted carcass or left over feces from Ali’s booty.

This pup gov. Is so weak they make me sick unu can’t even think good man anybody know they would do this why didn’t you think how to do it unu need some lessons what a total disappointment unu are get unu shit together pup they are making you all look like fools fumbling in the dark.

I said it yesterday and i will say it again.

I am totally disappointed in the PUP – i could have told them something like this would have hapened but they should have planned for this…

This really demoralize people who want to support the PUP – because it shows lack of planning, execution and vision!

You cant be falling short with a simple job – my father always use to tell me:

If you cant be successful with a simple exercise like this how would you be able to run the country in a positive way????

Who we should all be very disappointed in as Belizeans is the current government. many of their elected personnel are behaving in a very disrespectable and dispicable manner. The opposition would not have any grounds on which to could have filed a recall petition if Penner was beyond reproach and conducted himself in like manner. Regardless of which party you voted for we or support as Belizeans should never remain quiet when we see things like this happening in our country. What is worse is the PM is covering up Penner’s and the other’s actions and now the Office of Elections and Boundaries is locking steps with the GOB.

Will Belizeans ever grow beyond politics so our country can florish? I do not care which party it is we should all speak out against mess like this!
