VIP speaks on Corruption in Belize

Hubert Enriquez

Chairman for the Vision Inspired by the People also commented on the ongoing perception of rampant corruption within various government departments, including the Lands Department, as well as the Ministry of Immigration and Nationality.

Hubert Enriquez, Chairman, VIP

“Corruption is clearly a big issue in Belize and steps must be taken to eliminate it wherever it occurs. The effects of corruption is best captured by a simple formula which is the paid on this t-shirt in fact this is the team for this year’s international anti-corruption campaign, it says zero corruption, one hundred percent development. This means that the more corruption there is the less funds will be spend, the less resources are going to be provided for programs that are going to affect people’s lives. This applies across the board to all sectors of the economy; whether it be healthcare, education, police, I think we have heard some of these instances by Audrey. Law administration services, port and immigration, rental of government offices, the hiring o government workers and staff, the granting of scholarships just to name a few. Corruption also occurs in the granted of developing concession and the issue of production sharing agreements. Foreign affairs is also affected because the recruitment of staff to embassy’s is not necessarily done on the basis of competence but ion the basis of patronage and nepotism.”

In an address delivered this morning by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, he says that, (Quote) corruption is a barrier to achieving the Millennium Development Goals and needs to be taken into account in defining and implementing a robust post-2015 development agenda, (unquote).

Nice blah blah blah. When was the last time this government handed in data to Tansparency International? This makes for nice headlines but without results, is just hot air. The problem with our present and past leader is that everyone takes their cue from them. Since the boss is a thief, what do u expect the employees to do? Without punative intervention from civil society, nothing will change. The institution with the greatest ability to impact change is the Church. We need meaningful and forceful intervention from the Church, the Chamber and the Bar Association. Civil servants are in a precarious position and easily victimized. Otherwise we will be well on our way in becoming a failed state.
