Workshop explores gender relationships

Story PictureThis morning young leaders gathered in Belize City to participate in a two day seminar entitled “Working with young men and women in the promotion of gender equity and health”. According to the workshop’s co-facilitator, Eva Burgos of the National 4H- Youth Development Centre, the idea is to examine how we treat each other.

?Based on statistics, and even the one to one talks, it?s more macho, it?s the one to one male dominant. We still have to get out of that that women also have the same power and authority to work along side by side, not male over female.?

Janelle Chanona, Reporting
?What exactly is this workshop trying to do with its participants??

Eva Burgos
?This is basically just to think about it, not to have a behavioural change but really think about it. What are we doing as young leaders in Belize, as organizations as one to one person, what is our stand? To see if we are really working with gender equity or in a way are we giving that whole socio-economic, socio-environmental and gender equity. Because most men believe whenever its sexual reproductive health, it?s male, it?s not a woman thing. So we need to focus on young people, especially, young leaders, getting out there and getting the message across.?

The workshop is implemented by the Youth Leadership in Sexual and Reproductive Health Program with sponsorship from the Summit Foundation.
