Another cabbie murdered in Belmopan

Orlando Smith

On Thursday night, there was a murder in the Salvapan area of the capital where another taxi driver lost his life. The body of the cabbie, Orlando Smith, was found dead with his throat slit; his vehicle was also recovered not far away between miles forty-four and forty-five on the George Price Highway. It is believed that robbery was behind the murder and police are looking at three fares seen in Smith’s taxi just before the murder, as the suspects. Duane Moody has a report.

Rata, as he was affectionately known, was a taxi driver from Roaring Creek for the past nine years. According to Carol Smith, the last time she spoke to her husband was late Thursday evening and was shocked when she heard the tragic news from her sister-in-law after eleven o’clock.

Police say that information collected from the investigation so far indicates that robbery was the motive of this senseless murder. And that they are looking for two Belmopan residents in connection with the murder.

ASP Sinquest Martinez

“The motive has been ascertained as robbery. His geo prism was not found on the scene. Neighbors saw the vehicle speed off in that area and the vehicle was found on the George Price Highway.”

“Do you have any leads? I understand that you are looking for two persons of interests.”

ASP Sinquest Martinez

“Yes we surely do. We are looking for two persons of interests that could assist us in this investigation. The vehicle was stolen but recovered; certain items were stolen from out of his vehicle and that is the reason why I say that the motive is robbery.”
